Air compressor decision

I am thinking of getting an air compressor before doing more off-roading (I'm a beginner). I am told that the ARB single model 12v model for installation will not fit my 24 Wildtrac. Is there another that will or does it make just as much sense to buy the same version in a kit that you just carry with you. Advantage to the kit in a box is portable and seems to have all the components needed? Also, why is there single and double motor versions of the compressor.

Are you sure? ARB hoses are RED! THAT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE AN ARB HOSE FAILURE. THAT IS ANOTHER MANUFACTURERS HOSE. Check out the ARB website. There is not a green hose anywhere. When you try to save a few dollars, sometimes you get what you pay for.

Right, not ARB hose just another heat related issue.

MorrFlate is green, aren't they? "The brand loyalty is strong in this one."

There's alot of Green Morrflate hoses on line. However, my point here is that we be careful about failure claims. It has been asserted that underhood ARB Pump mounting generates heat that leads to hose (or fitting?) Failure. However, the one "proof" is a non ARB hose. My experience with my ARB single, underhood installed air pump, with all ARB hoses and fittings, is complete reliability for 3.5 years in beach tire inflation. Also, the fittings get hot, first, not because of the engine, but because of the heat that compressing air generates. Any portable pump will be too hot to touch after inflating 4 tires. Sure, there are other places to mount a pump. However, exexperience Says that ARB underhood mounts are an excellent choice.

Here's a hose failure last year at Super Cel West

Sure there are failures, like with anything, but some failures are because people do not properly maintain them.. They install them and think okay, cool, good to go!..

Well, sorta but ---> nope.. You have to check and either clean or replace the filter. Clean / replace the filter more often if it's used a lot and / or under extreme conditions..

People need to check their hoses and gauges before heading out as well but many people do not..

I do not think that is an ARB hose in the image. Looks like a MorrFlate but they make quality hoses as well.. Nonetheless, if a hose looks rough just replace it BEFORE it becomes an issue on the trail..

Anything can and will fail especially if it's not properly maintained. People have been running ARB's under the hood for decades without any en masse type issues..

I can't see that persons responses but I can see what you've quoted. I have never replaced a hose on an ARB dual that's been installed under the hood..

I do wonder why some have and others like me, have not.. Weirdness... 🀷

Another option to consider is something like a PowerTank Setup.. I originally had one in my Bronco but later swapped it out for the ARB.. The issues with a PowerTank is they take up cargo space and getting them refilled cost money. Finding Co2 refill places might be difficult depending on where you are in the USA..

But they do refill tires 10X faster than the ARB dual does..

Bronco 2dr: https://powertank.com/products/10-lb-2-door-bronco-edition-power-tank

Bronco 4dr: https://powertank.com/products/10-lb-bronco-edition-power-tank

Here was mine installed in my Bronco 2dr:

I went the same route. I looked at both options (Compressor/Tank), if I went compressor, it would be twin ARB hands down. But I opted for the added versatility of the Power Tank's portability. I have many places to refill the tank, and it costs >$25 to refill it. It lasts long enough to do at least 28 air/down/air/up cycles (that's 7 offroad trips), which is usually about all I do in a year.

"The brand loyalty is strong in this one."

I have not read any 'brand loyalty' type posts.. ARB makes some good gear and some trash gear. Morrflate makes some good gear as well.. I'd buy Morrflate hoses without a second thought..

I had an ARB digital tire gauge and that thing was absolute garbage! The gauge would read 38 but the tires would be significantly, like 10-15 psi less..

I eded up getting this to replace it and this one has not missed a beat and is spot on!

Astro Pneumatic Gauge

ARB compressors and hoses are pretty rock solid though..

Nice!!! πŸ‘ πŸ’ͺ

I do miss my PowerTank.. Like 10 seconds to fill a 35" tire! But I needed the space as the 2dr is already space challenged..

I am nostalgic for the air tanks, we used a simple 18" air tank in the late 1950's, filled it with simple air at the gas station, and it would do the car inflation for a trip or two on the beach. It was just to get us home, or to the station. The power tank and its welding gas and fancy hoses is a whole other world! I think, after install, about the same cost as an underhood ARB? Very cool!

I have a MorrFlate dual compressor that I keep in its bag. As with all my "recovery" gear, I don't want to carry around all that weight unless I am on a trip where I might need it.
I also have the 4-tire hose setup. I will say that getting it all set up and ready to go takes about twice as long as to go from 23 to 39 PSI for all 4 tires. (About 4 minutes)
As for carrying around a huge tank of compressed air in a vehicle that might get tossed on its side? I used to work for Luxfer, who made aluminum gas cylinders such as scuba tanks. The videos we had of them exploding were... spectacular...

Back in the mid 80's I wheeled with a scuba type tank set up that was strapped down to the roll bars in my Jeep.. πŸ˜‚

People have been wheeling with air tanks for decades.. I'd be more worried about all the crap that I have crammed into my Bronco flying around and smacking me in head long before I'd be worried about the tank exploding in the event of a rollover..

I hear you. Working for the manufacturer, I likely heard the worst of things.

It is worth repeating one part: If you choose to repaint your aluminum cylinder, do not put the tank in low level heat to treat the paint.

I wedge mine between the right "C" pillar and the right rear window. Out of the way, always handy.

Bragging about airing up times is sort of like guys in the 1960s bragging about cubic inches, horsepower, and acceleration.

My apologies!!!
There was no attempt on my part to brag about any part of this. I was trying to make 2 points:
1. The double compressor is really fast
2. The total time of the 4-tire version and the 1-tire version might actually be similar, since the 4-tire set up takes so long.

As for where you keep the recovery gear, it still weighs the same...

My point about "bragging" was a general observation, nothing personal.
It took me maybe 10-15 minutes to get things set up at first. I can do it in maybe 5 if I stay focused and don't get chit-chatty.
I put a remote switch on my permanent install. So now I just sit in the driver's seat and monitor the psi on the dash, then shut it off when I'm at my target. (I suppose that's a brat.)

I had / tried the Morrflate 4 tire system with their new brain box and while it was very convenient for airing up and down, it was a bit of a PIA to set up and break down for use each time and takes up quite a bit of storage space inside the Bronco. There are 5 hoses total and they were a bit of a pain to roll up after each use.

I could have crammed their system in the Bronco but for me, a traditional one hose setup is preferred.. The Morrflate is a great system, it's just not for me.

Plus my 2dr is already very close to maxed out, space wise.

Behind the driver and passenger seat on the floorboard areas:

  • Winch recovery gear
    • snatch block
    • recovery ring
    • tree protector
    • 6ea soft shackles
    • 30 foot kinetic recovery rope
    • 20 foot tow strap
    • gloves
    • hard shackles
    • Deadman V2 Earth Recovery Kit
  • MaxTrax Mini Traction Boards (laying on the rear seats)
  • Tire repair kit (under pass seat)
  • First Aid kit (under pass seat)
  • Bronco 84 piece tool kit
  • Extra Tie Rods (under driver seat)
  • Duct tape and zip ties (under driver seat)
  • Safe Jack with extensions
  • DMOS compact shovel

Rear cargo area:

  • Car Fridge
  • LifePo4 battery generator for car fridge
  • Astro Pneumatic Digital Gauge and ARB Air Hose
  • ARB Tire deflator
  • 100 watt solar panel with extension cables (sits behind car fridge, takes up almost no additional space.)

Plus in the front passenger seat area I have a drone kit and a Starlink Mini for emergency call use, if needed. As you can see, my 2dr is pretty well maxed out..

I go out solo most of the time so I need to carry everything I'd need.

Don't get me wrong, the Morrflate is a brilliant system that is very convenient but like you said, I can air up or down all 4 of my tires just as fast doing them one at a time with my traditional 1 tire ARB setup -vs- the time it takes to setup and use the Morrflate system.

Keeping with the air compressor stuff. As said before I use the Napa duel piston and ezflate hose set up for the bronco.

I have a Milwaukee battery powered compressor that I use for lots of stuff. And I love how portable.
However it works pretty hard when airing up tires that run in the 75 and 80 psi range. Found this out yesterday.

No I keep them folded up.. They do not fold completely flat (at least in the 2dr) and the rear seat backside acts as a barrier and keeps my car fridge and battery power bank from sliding forward when 4-wheelin' in the rough stuff.. I do have the fridge and power bank strapped down but they still like to move around in the rough stuff..

I tried folding them down but decided against it for those main reasons..

At some point I might do a rear seat delete and come up with a different solution for securing my car fridge and battery pack.. I really wish someone would make a rear cargo sliding rack system for the 2dr..

I run the ARB dual compressor engine mounted. As for hoses I have the MorrFlate quad hose kit, with a six foot extension hose that runs between the pump and air hub manifold. I also added the small ARB tank that helps to dissipate heat. I originally had the MorrFlate valve with the batteries, but it goes through batteries like crazy and the pressure was always way off. I spent some money and purchased the MorrFlate air hub. I find it to be much more accurate, balances the tire pressure between the tires more evenly, holds a charge/charges easily. once you figure out how it works it is a simple, set it and forget it system. Gloves are definitely a must after inflation. I wish there was a built in bleed off valve to drain the residual pressure off after use. If you aren’t paying attention it is easy to launch a hose while disconnecting. I learned from experience. One thing I have noticed that happens on the slide valve connectors is that they will get some dirt build up, and can become difficult to connect and disconnect. I keep a can of WD-40 Dry Lube with PTFE in my box and I give them a spray if they become sticky. zero issues after 2 1/2 years of use.

I took the seat cushions out of mine so they will fold flat if you do that. Something to think about. Just a couple screws for each one.
