Maybe this is an old exhausted topic but I am a new owner... what is the final word on this... 6 quarts or 7? my latest findings is that it is 7 and Ford put in the wrong dipstick in the truck and now they don't want to recall the wrong dipstick so they changed the oil capacity to 6 so the wrong one reads correctly... I saw several videos on youtube that the guy drained 7 quarts from the engine. Several owners say when they too delivery of their Bronco the dipstick read way overfilled..... Please advise...

Good to know… thank you for sharing…

I ran a Ford Performance oil separator.
It definitely had collected a reasonable amount of oil… but back then I ran 7 qts…
How much oil do you run 6 or 7 qts????

On the breather side I ran a canister….
It was totally bone dry also….

Eventually took all of this off…

Coming down from Tehachapi pass (returning from LV Offroadeo) I had hot oil vapor combust the collected oil in the Ford performance oil separator….(large boom twice)

Got home from that trip and removed it….
Since then that Bronco was replaced with my Ordered one (after 2 years of waiting…..2nd day reservation)

Thanks for sharing… I’m going to leave it stock.
Yah I think that stock is best for this engine, at least mine. A good endorsement for Ford. Especially of a turbo engine.
I run 7 qt. Mobil 1 5-30.
I was surprised because I put a Ford Performance separater on my Boss Mustang and it does catch a small amount of oil.

Again Ford first said 7 was right. Most all including mine came with 7. My dealer ordered me a dipstick they claimed along with other dealers was right. Now with 7 quarts it reads on the max fill line. Ford also claimed that running 7 would do no damage.
Ok, no damage at 7 qt. One would have to think 7 would most have to be better than 6qt.
That’s my logic…

I got first oil change today at 2,500 miles. I was at Ford dealer where I bought Bronco, had a bad feeling when I pulled in. Explained to the group working in the quicklane that I had one of the broncos with wrong dipstick, and also 6 quarts is what Ford states for oil change. After they are done bring paper work and I ask how many quarts did you put in, a little over 7. I said I am not taking Bronco, drain it and refill with 6. They insist 7 is what Ford requires. I Said don't touch Bronco, I walk across parking lot to the service dept explain the situation and ask if there is a Ford service bulletin about oil, they say yes. Only requires 6 quarts but 7 quarts won't damage engine. Go back across parking lot and tell them to call their own service dept. Long story short Dealers don't even have clear and specific details on oil changes. They drained, and then filled to 6 quarts. they also said they will not get me the correct dip stick but that I could order one from service dept.

This is directly from Ford Performance

It's hard to believe there are still people putting an extra quart of oil in their very expensive engines because Ford made a couple of mistakes in their initial roll out. Ford has now admitted their mistakes in the SSM's listed above, and it's time to move on

It's a 6 quart engine, with a 6 quart dipstick, and the (revised) online manual says 6 quarts. Adding more is most likely not your golden ticket to eternal engine life

My 10/4/22 build was delivered with an H dipstick and the oil level spot on the top of the hash marks

Have a nice day

They never put in the wrong dipstick…..at least that is Ford’s story…. With the stock dip stick the max fill hole is 6 quarts… The ”H” dipstick is what comes from the factory.

Here is a pic of my 1000 mile oil level…It is clearly overfilled by Ford from new…
My Bronco built 7/28/2022 delivered 8/2/2022.

Regrettably 7 quarts registers into the twists well past the max fill hole of the 6 qt stock dipstick….. meaning it is overfilled and impossible to read (note pic below).

Having said that, there are those who actually want to read the 7 quarts ( below or at the max fill hole)…
This is where the confusion starts….This where people chose to purchased the “Triangle” (marked as shown below) dipstick MB3E-6750-BB D454A (engineering number not part number) utilized in the B-Raptor 3.0 or some Lincoln (I think) (which uses 7 quarts as per the manual)

Anyway…. If you believe and trust Ford ….stick with the 6 quarts/6qt stock dip stick.
It only took them a year to decide this…. But they have officially came to a conclusion….

***** But it doesn’t explain why they still come overfilled from the factory😜😜😜😜

Since ford claims: “it won’t hurt the motor running 7 quarts”. And you choose to run seven quarts

You might want to purchase the alternative triangle dipstick.

Enclosed are pics of both dip sticks…

Personally… I’m going with 6 + quarts and the stock dipstick.

Hope this helps…

thanks for the info and you are correct that the only mystery in this is that why the truck came from the factory with 7 quarts..... just came back from off-road rodeo and asked the instructor and he said its the first time he hears about this issue ( so no help from this angle) asked a couple of folks on the team who did oil changes already and they all took to the dealer and did not pay attention to how many quarts the dealer put in...

Thanks for reporting. Is there a part number for the Bronco oil separator or was that just a pic from your mustang?

That was a photo from my mustang. Again I don’t recommend one for the 2.7 Bronco because I removed mine after 900 miles as it was bone dry.

I just changed oil at 975 break-in and replaced with 7 quarts (since that's what my manual states). The old dipstick definitely shows way overfilled. The catch can had a very small amount of oil but is usually dry. After reading all these posts I'm still confused. Do I use old dip and go with less than 7? Do I order new one and use 7? Do I drain, measure and refill what came out? Or do I not give a sh*t and just drive it until I see smoke? The next oil change I'll probably add 6 quarts, pull the stick and go from there. WTF @Ford Motor Company ? 😝 😖

Yep Ford played a real 🏓 ping pong game for months. Remember- they filled all the 2.7’s with 7 quarts for quite a while (drained out). They may still be. I have seen photos of 7 quarts in the oil pan as tested by other owners. It still showed below the top of oil pan.

Ford emphatically stated over and over that 7 quarts would do no harm. If it does no harm, then it has to be beneficial. How can’t it be?

My first 2 oil changes were 7 quarts per Ford. Just did my 3rd oil change and used 6 quarts. Dipstick showed 1/2 quart low. Added 1/2 quart, shows full. My advice is add 6 quarts, see what the dipstick says, then go from there. I never had an issue with 7 quarts.
MORE importantly: use quality synthetic oil, factory filter and change every 5k or so despite what the oil monitor says.
Turbos need good clean oil to last, penny pinching to get an extra 1-2 k miles makes no sense especially when you realize that you are using the last of the dirtiest oil to save a few dollars on a very expensive engine.
BTW, one of the best rated oils, Pennzoil 5-30 full synthetic is just $22 for 5 quarts on Amazon.

AND the factory filter is $10:

That's my 2 cents.

Did you use ramps? Wondering if that has anything to do with fully draining oil?

I do my own oil changes, one thing I've found that helps get the small, stubborn O-ring onto the end of the plastic center shaft of the oil filter housing is to grab a 3/8 - 1/4 socket adapter, and fit the square 3/8 drive end over the 4 ridges on the end of the shaft - it fits perfectly. Then slip the new O-ring over the 1/4 drive square, push it down so it expands over the outside of the socket adapter, and keep pushing it down until it slips over the end of the plastic shaft and down into the groove.

A lot easier than trying to stretch it with you thumbs or using a pick or hook and possibly tearing it.

Do the "flat foot crank" to prime the engine before starting it, and don't forget to reset the oil life reminder.

Great tip on o-ring. Thanks.
