Two door or moredoor?

I have had several EB's, or Gen1's in my day, I just love the way they look. Being in Knoxville and seeing all the super celebration rides show up has my juices flowing! Anyway, my wife and I have quadruplets who are all going off to college this fall. I want to get a Gen6 this summer so the wife and I can do some overlanding once we are empty nesters. (so weird to think about!) This is my question. Are there any 2 door guys who regret not getting a bigger ride? I am mainly concerned with storage behind the rear seats. I really want a 2 door, but I do fear the lack of storage. I intend to get a roof rack and put a clam-shell tent of some kind up there, so that might limit up-top storage also. Anyway, just thinking through some stuff, thought I'd ask the brain trust for your $.02
Thanks, as always!

Wife and I went with the 2 door. Her idea of roughing it is a hotel room without a mini bar so...

My wife's idea a camping is sleeping on the floor at the Ritz.

The 2-door is just a cool vehicle. It's compact and tidy. I really don't overland or camp (see above post). But I do road trip a full-dress touring motorcycle. The 2-door Bronco is a 4-wheel'd canyon compared to a touring motorcycle. Learn to pack well and carry only the crap you need, not what you think you need. Get a 2-door; it's the essence of Bronco.

My first car was a 70 Bronco which I loved… Now that I have grandkids who want to go, the four door (squatched) was the easy choice…

Having just spent a week with Bronco owners from all over, the 2-door looks amazing but does sacrifice a lot in terms of space and ingress/egress, in my opinion.

In terms of off-road performance, the toughest obstacles tackled this eeek were by 4-doors.

off road I have found that the longer wheel base has advantages in certain situations (not many but a few) and I have found the shorter wheel base has an advantage in certain situations (not many but a few).

For the locations I TEND to wheel, I run into more situations where the shorter wheel base advantages outweigh the disadvantages. That will be different everywhere you go. A good driver can make all the difference. I am not a good driver. I am out of practice and rusty as hell. I am working on changing that. It is fun to get back out on the course.

Because of our two German shepherds, we started by looking at the 4 door. Even though it's just my wife and I.
Full disclosure, our daily drivers are a crew cab dually and an expedition EL. Neither has a shortage of room
The bronco is for fun and adventure.
We liked the look of the 2 door more, so out came the tape measure (to fit dog crates).
Wound up with a 2 door and custom dog crate.
Just finished a week in Moab. No dogs but we'll packed travel and off road gear (stayed at the Hilton).
I have zero regrets on the 2 door and I wouldn't consider a 4 door. And I'm not knocking those who have a more door.

Shorter wheel base is superior offroad.
more maneuverable and less chance of getting high centered.

Comparing stock to stock. Same options, I think that the trail and the driver will make the difference more than the # of doors.

Coming from a Willy's, not the decals on a new jeep, but a 1947 Cj, these broncos are HUGE. Especially the hood when climbing.

No doubt the short wheel base is better for extreme off roading! But we don’t do that much so 4 doors are better for us!

I dunno, this past week in Moab I saw some more doors doing some extreme stuff out of my 2 door windshield... Lol

The wife and I are empty nesters. We have a 2 door. We travel (no over landing) and we have adequate room, especially with smart packing and loading. A few times we lowered one or both back seats to carry a few extra items.

With a clam shell on top, you should be good to go. A 2 door was always what I was going to get, however, I would be the first to admit that a 2 door is impractical if you have kids. Bottom line is that I care more about the look than the storage.

I have a 2dr and storage is at a premium. Do I regret buying it? NOPE! I had zero interest in a 4dr.

I go on overnight camp trips and was able to fit everything needed in the 2dr on my maiden voyage with it. My tent is small when packed and most of my gear is also small when packed so not an issue for me.. A lot of my gear is backpacker inspired so it packs down small'ish..

Here is everything I brought and it all fit in the 2dr. Keep in mind that I am solo so some things you'd need to double up on. I also went with the hard top off so I did not have the extra vertical space that the hardtop enclosure would provide..

I also have a power tank installed in the rear cargo area that takes up space. I did not fold the rear seats down and used the rear seats to store containers and the rear seat floorboards to store other items.

  • Tent
  • Sleeping mat
  • Sleeping bag
  • Camp chair
  • Camp table
  • Jetboil Minimo
  • 1 frying pan, 1 plate, silverware
  • 2 100g propane tanks for the minimo
  • Yeti 8 cooler
  • Lantern, shovel, axe, flashlight, headlamp
  • Toiletries, dish washing soap, other small items.
  • Winch recovery gear
  • Hoses etc for Power Tank
  • Ford 84pc tool kit
  • Change of clothes
  • 2 gallon water jug

I might be forgetting something but that's the bulk of it. I was able to use the front pass side seat and floorboard area to store items that you would not be able to use..

If you fold the rear seats down and keep the hardtop on, I think you'd be able to store quite a bit. Even more so since you say you want a rack with a RTT.. Sure you might no be able to see out the rear window if you pack it up high but that extra vertical space with the hard top on would come in handy.. Just make sure to bungie or strap things down.

I wish I would have taken photos of everything packed in but I didn't. Maybe next trip at the end of the month I'll remember to do so..

Thank you for a very detailed reply. This is very helpful.

No worries with that front Camera. Especially useful when cresting a hill to see what's below.

Love my 2 Dr Basesquatch; the looks, turning radius is ridiculous, 5k cheaper, plenty of room I have 3 other 4 door vehicles for carrying people. Might sound weird the only thing I miss is my previous ride (still own, Chevy Trailblazer) was a 4 door and rolling down the driver front window and cracking open the back driver side let me drive practically turbulence free at any speed. My Bronco, no matter what I try with L/R windows is always blustery inside. Small but significant issue for this fresh air addict. So I put on a BB cap and wind them down and don;t worry
The turning radius IS absolutely insane. A major plus I did not expect.

I have a 4Door Badlands w/ Sasquatch. It has gotten me in and out of everything I have asked of it. Love them both and went with the large one as I need access for some mobility restricted passengers. Zero sacrifice. That being said, the wife has been mentioning a 2Door lately…🤣
Both are great vehicles. Can’t go wrong either way!
