I know there are lots of options with flights and the departure city matters also, but to those that already done Moab O/R, or researched it, did you fly into SLC or pay the extra to Grand Junction? I’m from OH and have a couple options for direct to SLC, but the 4 hour drive (?) is bit buzz kill.

We also looked at NH, looks like you have to fly into Boston with 2 hour drive, but don’t think I can book before the October Fall session would be over there.
Thanks in advance!

You can do Texas fly into either San Antonio or Austin . San Antonio is about 15 minutes longer but you don’t have to deal with Austin traffic. So windshield time might be less. We are getting rain lately so it should be pretty and the water obstacles should have water. Just a thought.

We just got back from Moab and we flew into SLC. If I had to do it again I would have paid the extra to fly into Grand Junction. It’s a long 4 hour drive and round trip is 8 hours in the car and not enjoying Moab! We did go see the Salt Flats on our way back to SLC which was cool.

We also visited the Grand Junction airport to swap rental cars because the Jeep we rented had mechanical difficulties. Ugh!

That's a terrible idea, when do we start?

I flew into Grand Junction after the stopover at SLC to avoid that long drive. Worked out great, and I think it was well worth the extra money. BTW, all of the O/R locations are great, but there's something special about Moab...

I've flown into/out of the Moab (aka Canyonlands, CNY) airport a couple times. Very low stress experience (unless you don't like the smaller planes). They have hopper flights to/from SLC and DEN. It's much closer than the other options, but if you need rental/Uber/shuttle/taxi transportation when you get here that can sometimes be challenging. Some hotels may offer shuttle services, so check with them first.

Man, when I first saw this thread title, I was hoping the discussion was about Broncos catching air :).

I'd have loved to do the Moab O/R, but by the time I compared the cost of flight/rental car/accomodations/travel time, I couldn't justify it vs the Vegas option.

Moab is a good option only if you don’t plan on renting a vehicle. Grand Junction was a breeze, well worth it.
The Moab O/R was amazing. Moab is magical. Next time, I drive out in my Bronco.

I ended up making a week trip out of it so we flew into SLC and bounced all around Utah. Also stayed on site for the off rodeo. Had a blast.

But if I were only flying in for the o/r one day only I would do grand junction.

FWIW I flew from Seattle to Grand Junction, CO and rented a car and drove to Moab from there. Nice, scenic 1.5 hour drive and better IMO than going to Salt Lake City.

Thanks for your suggestions, guys. This year I’ve been traveling too much by car, so I really miss flying. Guess I’ll take a business class. Actually, I like the Austin option the most. Cutting that traffic definitely makes sense because sometimes it becomes impossible to drive through it. Btw, guys, have you counted how many flights you’ve made this year? I’m really interested in how many times people fly. I guess I have only about 6 flights this year, while I had about 60 flights last year. I used to travel for work a lot.

For me I checked Expedia and its $3500 for Flight, hotel, rental for 2 people from here. That’s to go to Grand Junction. Kinda steep but I think for me MOAB is gonna have to be the way to go so gotta get approved from president (wife).
BTW when does O/R expire for owners I think end of 2023.

Just attended MOAB on 6/17/23 and it was exceptional. Early flight into SLC and we were in Moab by early afternoon. We had a 5 day trip so we paired it with a lot of hiking. The 4 hour drive was very scenic with several places to stop for food and potty breaks. When I looked at the connecting in Grand Junction and the issues that brings, and there were more airlines and flight options, SLC was an easy choice.

I went Memeorial Weekend to Moab from Norfolk to Grad Junction via Dallas. For me, this was the way to go. 90 minutes if staying at Redcliffs Lodge, 120 if staying in Moab.

As far as which Rodeo to attend, it really is personal preference. I chose Moab because it is the only one to use actual public trails and it can't get any realer than that.

That's a terrible idea, when do we start?

I had pretty much the same experience. Personally, I think that SLC and drive vs. GJ and shorter drive is 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other. Note that GJ is a small airport in a small town, so less traffic and big city nonsense to deal with.

If this about a short drive....Vegas is the closets to its O/R and I thought they were really great! Its also the (only) location for the B-Raptor experience.

If it's about an adventure......Moab is fantastic(not to say any of the others are bad, just haven't been to the others)!

As for flying, SLC gives you the most options (as others have stated as well) from getting a rental car/hotel etc. The drive is actually really nice once you get through most of the SLC area traffic. I'd caution you on flying into CNY or GJT as it's a regional flight and those flights have a higher probably of delays or cancellations......don't ask me how I know. 😉 Not saying you'll have issues but if you do, your options become a lot more limited. It's also likely the tickets are more expensive too.

Good luck, it'll be a great adventure either way!

We're planning to make an extended stay of our trip to Moab - to include a few nights at the Red Cliffs Resort. We can get considerably cheaper flights if we are flexible our travel dates. Since I have extra days to enjoy the surrounding area, thought on using Denver, Vegas or Salt Lake City as my destination airport?
