Bronco Tool List: If you're building out a tool roll this list is for you.

I haven't found a good list anywhere and as easy as it is to go buy a cheap tool set and hope for the best I found the time to document some of the specific tools I’ve used so far to work on my Bronco and finally build out my Bronco Specific tool roll. This also should cover tools needed for oil changes, removing a wheel and repairing/ replacing the tie rod (which I’ve not done). I’d call it a start of a minimum but not all inclusive list. This does not replace the Bronco provided toolkit. I’d recommend you keep that with you.

Comment below with any must have additions (and why). I'll update as needed.

  • Wrenches
    • 10, 13, 16, 17, 19, 21 mm
  • Sockets
    • Ratchet 3/8 drive minimum
    • Socket extensions 3/8 drive minimum, 1in, 3in
    • 8, 10, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18,19, 21, 27 mm
  • Torx
    • T25, T30, T40,IP40 Torx Plus, T50
  • Hex/ Allen
    • 5mm
    • 13mm - probably not needed
    • 5/32 or 4mm
    • * I’m sure this list is incomplete for some of the interior items
  • Misc
    • Hammer
    • Adjustable Wrench Medium
    • Channel Locks Medium
    • Multi Screwdriver
    • Pry Flat Tip Screwdriver
    • Needle Nose
    • Zip Ties
    • Duct Tape Flat Roll
    • Boot Clamp Pliers
    • Torque wrench if possible
    • Bailing wire
    • Trim and Molding Tool Set
    • Vise-Grips

I have lots of tools but I am seriously considering this kit. I checked them out at King Of The Hammers this year and it appears to be great quality, USA made and lifetime warranty. It is a pretty comprehensive kit that you wouldn't have to add very much to to complete the list on this thread.

I checked that out as well. One of my objectives was to have my tool kit stored in the rear storage area, versus a separate bag or roll. I ended up with the Blueridge Overland Gear tool roll - and when rolled, it does not fit. BUT, I can store the 4 bags separately in the area - which is the route I went for now. What I don't have room for is my wrench roll, so I'm still evaluating what I can consolidate or do differently.

$600 is a lot of money for a set that may not get used much (hopefully) out on the trail. As for me, I've put together a list from this thread, and have been accumulating much of it from yard & barn sales, Harbor Freight, old stuff of mine that got orphaned out, and the like. ThorsLightning included a bag I don't need with my hard-wire mount, so the stuff goes in there, nice and handy. I do separate things out a bit with zip-lock and other containers, for example, socket wrench items in one, zip-ties, tapes, adhensives & WD-40 in another, and so on.
Simple, cheap, and hopefully adequate.

I would like to add something to this list that I find of immense value, particularly because I have to work on my Bronco in a garage with poor lighting. It’s simple enough: a head lamp. The best tools in the world are useless if you have to work in the dark!

I bought this to supplement my camping gear but it’s proven its worth to me in the garage on several occasions. The light is exactly where I want it…wherever I look. And it’s BRIGHT!

I think so. It’s very comfortable and lightweight. I also like how it’s on a pivoting bracket so you can angle the light downward. Pretty clever invention. I counted three brightness settings, along with a red strobe light for jogging safety. Totally worth the modest investment.

I keep mine in the center console. I use it often. They are amazing.

That's funny. So do I! I originally stored it under my trunk, then in my Molle storage bag on the tailgate but I found it most useful having quick access to it in the console. Right alongside my tire pressure gauge, which I use to keep the electronic readout on the dash honest. LOL

That's scary. I also have a tire pressure gauge in there. Only other things in there are my tire deflators which I no longer use since I got my 4 tire deflator, a rag and a garage door opener. lol

For those with wheel locks, KEEP YOUR WHEEL LOCK SOCKET/KEY IN YOUR BRONCO. In the factory tool bag zippered compartment is where mine stays - along a socket that fits it (if it's not the same size as the lug nuts), and a short breaker bar (18" long is good) to fit the socket.

You know how you've always heard to check and re-torque your lug nuts like 50 - 100 miles after changing a flat or rotating tires? Yeah, DO that. Apparently the nuts on one of my wheels didn't get torqued all the way after the last tire rotation, going down the highway at 80 I kept feeling a slight vibration - that gradually got worse. I pulled over, checked the lugs, and sure enough, all of them on the left front were loose. Barely finger tight. Good thing I had all the previously mentioned tools in the Bronco, I was able to tighten everything (including the wheel lock) and drive on.

It’s definitely missing some sizes, and doesn’t include many of the necessary tools to do the more common field repairs—most notably tie rod swaps.

It makes a really good blueprint for a DIY kit, most of the tools in that kit I have in my kit. But at the price… eh… it is definitely up there. It’s not catastrophically overpriced by any stretch, but you’re definitely paying for that Bronco logo.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I have tool bags already. So I'll just start picking up the pieces as I go.

I like that kit. The Bronco logos could help distinguish the tools from others. At this point, I think I've got everything I need in one form or another. If I were starting out, I'd consider it. The price is steep, but I like the idea of having most of these things in a convenient roll pack.

I just took delivery of the Boxo KOH kit and it is phenomenal. I priced out all the tools on the original list individually from Tekton and a few other sources and the Boxo kit had basically everything with a few things I hadn't thought to add, plus a well organized bag and tool roll, all for less than what you'd pay for the individual items. The tool quality is first rate. If you are wanting a complete offroad toolkit, this is as easy as it gets.

This kit here?

That is definitely a more complete kit. The only two sizes it is missing for the Bronco is a 27mm, and of course all of the Torx Plus sizes. Price is up there... but if it was between the Boxo kit and the Motley kit... I'd probably pick the Boxo kit as a starting point.

I just added the few Torx sizes and the 27mm from Amazon and I think I'm in good shape.

That looks like a great starting point, thanks. I may have to go with that one and just add in some missing pieces.

Also decided on the BOXO KOH kit as a starting point instead of creating my own tool roll after pricing tools individually. Have the TP pieces from Amazon as well.

I think you will find the tie rods can be swapped using the adjustable wrench and the locking pliers. It has the Torx plus bits for the various "Bronco bolts," deep impact sockets for lug nuts or other high torque fasteners, and a breaker bar. What other fasteners do think are missing?

Full disclosure, I work for the company that manufactured the OEM Bronco tool kit and am genuinely curious. I can also answer or get the answers to any questions you might have on the tool kit. I cannot comment on Ford's business decisions or prices on the kit. We have been getting some great feedback on the kits from buyers and have had zero returns so far. Let me know your thoughts. Cheers.
