Found this on YouTube. It's a Moonshade awning someone made work with a soft top. Not sure if I trust it but not terrible.
A couple of 3"x3" pieces of sheet metal to put under the soft top and those magnets would have a (relatively) solid connection to the soft top. Of course, bevel/sand/round all the edges so you don't rip your top. I think that would be much stronger than balancing on the roof bow.
