A couple days ago I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on addending 37" tires on my 2.3l manual Badlands non sas, with about 6500 miles on it. I did not go with the wheel and tire upgrade when I originally ordered the bronco.

I decided to go with the Nitto trail grappler mt 37x12.50r17lt. I decided to keep my stock wheels, I like them.

A couple months ago I had added the bronco buster purch collar lift/level, 2 1/4 front lift and 1 1/4 rear lift. These are advertised as allowing you to add 37s to a badlands.

Shortly after I had received my bronco back in December, I had added 1 1/2 inch wheel spacers.

I decided to purchase the rough country tailgate reinforcement, spare tire relocater and the 3rd break light relocater brackets. Totaling about $240.

First thing I noticed was the enormous weigh difference from the old BFGs to the new nittos, not a huge surprise with the 4" plus hight difference and the 2.5 width difference plus the new tires are 10 ply.

First thing we did was remove the crach bars on the front end, of course we had to remove the front bumper to remove the front crash bars.

I wanted to run the new tires without the wheel spacers, to reduce the poke of the wider tire. We discovered that we could not, due to the tire hitting the upper control arm, at 1/2 of the stearings full turning radius. I believe this is due to the 2 1/2" wider tire. I think I can add narrower spacers and still be OK.

After completing the installation I took it for a drive. The louder road noise was the first thing I noticed, based on the tire tread not on the size.

Performance reduction was the next thing I noticed. I felt the road though the steering quite significantly, again this could be contributed partially to the aggressive tread pattern of the nitto. I also noticed at 60mph my rpms ran about 3 points lower. I found myself needing to shift down more often when going up hill. Before the change, I could set the cruse controle at 60 or 65 mph and not have any power loss up hill. Now I have to shift down to keep the set speed. MPGs is also taking a significant beating. At 6500 miles I was getting about 19mpg. I am finding it marching down quickly. Not sure where it will finally settle, as I've only driven it about 75 miles since the change.

Overall, I like the look and the increased clearance. I do anticipate the off-road perform e to be much better. The on-road performance is a little concerning as this is my daily driver. If it was mostly an off-road use vehicle, I would be less concerned.

Quick follow up here.

The other day I called Nitto. I wanted to know what they recommend for the appropriate tire pressure, for the trail grappler based on my vehicle. They asked for the info off the label in the drivers door jam. They did whatever it is they do and came up with 27psi. I proceeded to air down to 27. It appears now that the full width of the tread is now in contact with the pavement. I was a little surprised that I need to go that low for this result. Sicker in the door jam says 39psi is correct. That is a big change.

I'm definitely not feeling the road through my steering like I was.

MPGs.

Well, the reduction of mpgs has leveled off at about 18.3. Originally I was getting roughly 19 so not a terrible drop.

I did add the steel fender flares to reduce the poke I am getting with the new tires

The tires are still a little bit noisy but now it gives me an excuse to listen to my music louder.

Overall, the issues I was concerned about, really didn't amount to much and I'm really enjoying the new look and performance I'm getting with the 37s.

Hey Tstarks,
A question for you. Did you install the perch's or did you have it done for you. If you did it, how difficult was it for you, and if you did not, I would be curious to know what a shop charged you to do it.
Thanks and your Bronco looks great. Best colour ever!

I installed a perch kit on my 21 BL sas. Perch kit and a coil spring compressor kit 300 bucks. Took me about 4 hours to install all four.

Tire air pressure is based on the weight carrying rating of the tire. The 39 PSI recommendation is based on stock tires. When you upsize (significantly, in your case) or go with higher load rated tires (D or E rating), you can carry that same weight with a lower PSI.

27 is probably less than I might have guessed, but those 37s are substantially larger. Here's a popular online tire pressure calculator: https://tiresize.com/pressure-calculator/

Yeah, I had already tried that calculate, it had me setting them at 35psi. I was noticing that the outer and inner inch of my tires was not getting the same contact as the rest. The little new tire nibletd or whatever you call them, we're not wearing off. I decided to call nitto then.

I think with the nitto being ten ply with very heavy and stiff side walls is what is allowing the 27psi

Thanks. So, I could have done it but in my advanced age of 51 I wanted to have my tire guy do it. He had never done the purch collars but was willing to give it a try. I even kind of gave him a rundown on how it was supposed to be done. It took him about 2 1/2 hours. That included a five tire rotation as well. Once he did the first one the rest were much quicker. In a lot of the how to YouTube videos, they have you take off skid plates, bash plates, brake rotors, calipers and rear stay bar. My guy didn't do any of those things. Just pulled the strut and spring assembly, put on the collar and reassembled. If you want to dyi it most auto parts stores can rent you the spring press.

I was only charged labor, the going rate was $120 an hour. For me it was well worth the three hundred ish. Didn't even get charged for the rotation, cause they said they had to take the tires off to do the work.
