Exterior mounted recovery board options

I used ratchet straps with a makeshift mount for mine once. Drive 6 hours to the OBX, around town at the beach and on the sand for 5 days and then 6 hours back. Never budged. Checked them a few times and they were always strapped on solid. I’d go with the tire mount personally, out of the way and had zero issues with it.

Interior mounted and out of the way. What about this? Fits well inside the hardtop, and my new version that's in production should fit well within the soft top with exception of the fully retracted position.

That's a great solution for a 4 door but won't work for the 2 door.

Breathing life into this thread with another question. Anyone know if any available solutions to mount them on the factory roof rack? Just got a pair of Rhino USA recovery boards and they take up quite a bit of room inside the 2 door. Was trying to avoid the spare tire mount just so I don’t have to see them in the mirror but looking like I may not have a choice. Plus not sure how I’ll get them off the roof without a step stool lol.

There are a lot of solutions for roof mounted boards. Just search for recovery board roof rack mount and I’m sure some will pop up. I think MaxxTraxx makes one

Have not had luck finding much that will go on the factory cross bars, most are designed to go into the slots of aftermarket ones.

I am vertically challenged so I would need help reaching the top too! Maybe a hitch step (if you have a hitch). I use the side step I got that bolts on the rock slider to reach the roof.

Could work with another price of flat steel to make the top side of a clamp structure. Not sure how secure it would be from rocking around though.

I take it you don’t want to add the cross bar for the roof rack?

Could maybe use these on the factory roof rack? Use the notch cut out for your bolt that goes through your boards.

I know a Couple that has a Green 2-Door Sas with factory roof rack and they carry boards up there. I will ask how they have them attached.

It does vibrate with the rear tire, you only notice it because you don't really notice the rear tire vibrating without it attached. It's a little PIA to install because of the rotopax attachment, trying to line and adjust both sides while mounting isn't fun for one person, with two people it should be no problem. The only problem with this attachment method is if you get a flat tire and switch it out with the spare, besides the obvious you need to uninstall this, it won't mount to the flat tire that you switch out.

install a yakama rack on the factory rack you'll find it opens up a whole new system i.e. bike rack attachments, canoe, skis, Yeti and Thule containers, awnings....

I have a Gobi rack on my 4 door (i've seen 2 door versions) and they come with a platform that you can use to place bolts and wingnuts to hold boards

How did you attach it to the factory crossbars? The issue I have been having is figuring out that part since most accessories are designed for bars with slots in them. Maybe I’m not using a he right keywords in my search’s but can’t find anything that will clamp to the elliptical bars.
