Aftermarket Air Filters? What did you choose?

Hey fellow Bronco enthusiasts! Just wondering how many of you have went with an aftermarket air filter and if so what filter did you go with? I just ordered the Whipple filter for mine. I liked the fact it had the velocity stack on it, for more airflow and surface area. The other filters I have looked at K&N, Afe, BMC did not have the velocity stack with the extra surface area the tops are closed off. The only other filters I saw with the velocity stack was the S&B but they were out of stock. So have you upgraded you air filter or stuck with the paper oem?

That's a great choice. We did same. More turbo spool sound, better response time and maybe 3-5 more hp. S&B is the OEM. We've used their gear for 20 years. Go there for oil clean kits. We have the blue oiled version (see pics). Easy DIY install. It also pairs nicely with our sprint booster throttle controller you can buy here on BN in the practical accessories section. Note, we are switching to the white non oiled vtop filter next oil change. Make sure you run a pre-filter sock over the vtop filter if going in dusty terrain.

I got a k&n but it did have the Velocity stack. I would have gotten Whipple or Roush but I'm waiting until one of them comes out with a full cold air intake system and tune for the 2.3. It is an upgraded filter that is reusable.

I went with a standard replacement K&N having used their products for many years in a variety of vehicles with great results.
I subsequently went with a K&N cold air intake which replaces the stock box and plumbing. The included filter is cone shaped for greater flow. I do get more noise from the turbos and intake but it's not excessive and performance has increased. Mileage is so far the same except when I putting my foot in it.Screenshot 2023-01-09 at 9.39.25 AM.pngScreenshot 2023-01-09 at 9.39.09 AM.png

KN filter for now, gonna save some pretty pennies for a dry Mishimoto CAI though, gonna do a catalog car. Considering I offroad occasionally, I'll take the pinch less hp for peace of mind

Yeah, I put a K&N in mine. I like the reusable filters.

Anyone ran the Mishimotto Air intake for a 2.7L Wildtrack, 2 door, 2023? I looked at the K&N, however am concerned about the open top that is filtered to the intake case housing. Pulling in hot air and contaminates from the blow off valve from inside the engine compartment. (Yes I realize it recycles the air back thru the intercooler after). But my other concern is water when forging deep mud and water ruts. Hence why I went and found the mishimotto. Which closes the top off and leaves the factory intake only. That is until or unless I decide to get the choana's to put on the snorkel and cut into my front right quarter panel from Mishimotto as well and block off the factory intake. Or leave the plug out and double my air intake

Snorkel:

Any advise or discussion to help me decide would be grateful

I went with Roush on my 2.7 WildTrak. It's my understanding the filter itself is K&N.

How’s this going? Any noticeable difference or issues? Is Roush an oiled filter? I have heard oiled isn’t ideal off-road.

If you live in a dusty area, or do any off roading where it gets dusty, I highly recommend that you get rid of the K&N. For pavement princesses it's fine, but it lets by too much dust off road.

Agreed K&Ns filter better when they have a little dirt on them the problem is they let too much dust/dirt through until it reaches that point. Dust is not good for a turbo. You can add a pre filter but then you are basically back to a paper filter. If you can get a BHAF like from a diesel but I dont think there is room to fit.

I saw that sealed box and figured I could store some tools, ropes, etc. in there. When I took out that corrugated thing it gave me lots more room.

Thank you. I won’t be going with K&N based on this. Don’t want oiled in general do the dirt and trying to decide if a dry filter is worth it.

I travel on a gravel road daily for work. It does get dusty. They supply a sock which I have installed over the filter. I do not have any issues. Besides, both are easily cleaned and reusable.

THIS... So called "cold air kits" are terrible off road, especially on a forced induction motor. They do not filter as well as paper and WILL cause increased wear to the engine from extra dirt getting past the filter, mushrooming turbo vains and wearing out rings. This topic has been broached hundreds of times on other forums I frequent, especially diesel forums. Many tails of turbos and entire motors being destroyed by the use of these snake oil pieces. And Ford does deny the warranty claims, despite k&n and others marketing language saying they won't void your warranty. All for a minimal increase in power and some noise. Stock intakes these days are very good, and are actually "cold air intakes." Stick with paper. Nothing filters better. If you only frequent Starbucks and never hit the dirt in your pavement princess, then the aftermarket intake is ok.

We've run K&N intakes for many years on trucks, diesels & now have their intake on our 2.7 Bronco. Our Colorado trails are more rocky than dusty, but I did add FilterWears pre-filter sock on the Bronco's install. Noticable throttle response and luv dem turbo sounds.

Cheers

I pity the person who buys your vehicles after you dust the motors...

Mishimoto for the win. A great CAI system, and their filters are top rated, and washable.

I'm interested the results you're getting by adding that sock. Doesn't that restrict the airflow? Thus reducing the efficacy of the K&N?
