I recently got a 96 Bronco. The previous owner changed the rear end to a nine inch, and had 4.88 gears installed. The front d44 is still stock. I'm wondering what I need to do so I can make my gearing the same. Can I put 4:88 gears in the front? If so, what exactly do I need?

Speaking from experience that the IFS Dana 44 carrier is NOT the same as all of the other Dana 44s out there. I will also recommend a non-clutch type of limited slip or locker if you plan on driving on the streets with the hubs locked in, even if NOT in 4X4 mode. a good trac-lok will cause problems in steering when the hubs are locked in and driving on limited traction streets/roads.

Well it didn't pass smog because it has non California catalytic converters on it. They're talking $1600 - $2500 just for that. It may have just become a parts car

California is one of the only police states that require smog testing for the life of the ride. Most sane places to live understand that after 25 years only collectors own these rides.... and very few are daily driven. Even in Atlanta that has a top ten smog problem ... they are exempt after 25 years.

Put it up for sale on ebay motors. If it is a relatively rust-free California Bronco ..... you can easily get 15,000 to 20,000.

Let her "live free" in a nice home where she will be appreciated for the classic she is. DON"T SEND HER TO THE GLUE FACTORY BECAUSE THE CRAZY POLITICANS WANT TO PUSH YOU AROUND.

I'm not sure about cally .... but here in Atlanta it is illegal to sell a car that will fail emissions. This is law we have to prevent shady car lots from selling you a lemon that requires a few grand of improvements after purchase.

It's illegal here too. I got it in a trade. He assured me it would pass. Since I was trading up, I agreed to do it without a cert. Never doing that again. Now I have no way to get a hold of the guy and at least tell him well played on screwing me lol

I got the quote for the cats. They quoted high on purpose, hoping to be able to bring it down when I do it. $1597.00!!
I better start saving. Once it's done I'm going to swap out the 9 inch and those gears for a stock rear end with 3.55's in it and enjoy it for a while

The beauty of the 9 inch is the removable 3rd member. If going that route I'd pull and keep the 3rd member with 4.88s, just slap in another junkyard carrier with factory gears. When you are ready to put lower gears in the front, you can just swap the other 3rd member back in the rear and ride.

Close, but no banana. Cars built before 1976 are smog exempt in CA. They also aren’t the only state with that requirement. For example in Delaware cars older than 1967 are exempt, all others need a smog check every two years. Colorado also has test for life, Nevada tests 1967 or newer, etc.

I ended up trading the nine inch for a stock rear end. Swapped them out this weekend. My God that truck drives nice now!! And the 4x4 works flawlessly!! Happy camper here!!
