Coolant Running Out The Exhaust

I'm having so much trouble with this thing. It's a 96 Bronco with the 5.8. OK, here we go. Back in May the lower hose blew right at the hose-clamp, and I didn't realize it. It overheated, bad, killing the engine. Broke #1 piston even. When we were bringing it home, I got it started one last time and noticed water running out of the exhaust manifold. Figured it was just the motor being toast.

Recently I put another 5.8 in it. Got it running and am putting it back together. This motor was intact on the bottom end with exhaust manifolds on it. I put my timing cover on with a new water pump, and the rest of the whirly parts from my motor. It had the intake manifold and fuel rails on it, so I used my Plenum and throttle body. Seems to run good.

Today I decided it was time for a test drive. It ran fine for about five miles, and then it started missing a little. I got it home to discover water running out of the exhaust manifold in the same way the old motor was. It literally runs out the pipe at the flange and pours out of the tail pipe. No steam or white smoke, but water! Actual water. I disconnected the little water line that runs through the throttle body, and it didn't change anything. I figured that was a good place to start. Any ideas?

I find it odd that two engines would do the exact same thing (except this one didn't overheat) and leak water the same way. I'm stumped!

I borrowed a pressure test kit. When you pressurize the cooling system coolant squirts out of the exhaust pipe near the Y

Wow that is a lot of water. But I would put my money on a bad head gasket. Or head bolts that need to be torqued

I finally got one of the heads pulled and the head gasket is a disaster. I'll get the other head pulled tonight. So far there's no visible damage to the bottom end, so maybe this thing will be back together soon. I hope so. I miss it!head gasket.jpg

Well? I got the heads done and put everything back together........again. Seems to be running great!!! I was worried the cats were plugged, so we deleted them. Good call. They were pretty torn up inside. I sure hope this thing stays together this time

Thank you!! I just drove across town to the local Hellmart and back. Ran great!!! I have an oil leak I need to trace down, but it's not bad. Irritating more than anything. This thing seems pretty good so far. I need to just get in it and drive it for a while and let it earn its trust back

Found the oil leak. It's the power steering. I thought it was the pump, so I replaced it. Nope. I'll replace the return line in the morning. If that's not it then I have to wait until next week after I get paid to replace the pressure line. Getting there. The motor runs GREAT!!! Zero issues there

Great to hear you got the motor issue figured out. If I understand this correctly, both engines ended up having a blown head gasket? That is really strange.

Kinda. The first engine blew the lower hose right by the hose-clamp and overheated. It got so hot it blew the gasket and broke a piston. The second engine was just bad luck and the gasket blew for whatever reason. It was really rusty and looked like it had been getting close to going for a while.
