I’ve come to the conclusion that at our age, we need to stop lone wolfing our off-road adventures. We have joined the Az. Bronco club. So I’m looking for recommendations for brands and model #’s of two way radios. I’ve have not kept up with what is available today, or with the new technologies that are out there now.
I would love to hear about your experiences as well with different radios good and bad. Thanks.

GMRS (highly probable) You will want to check with those you will be running with. FCC license is easy. good for whole family for 10 years. Hand helds and in vehicle units available. Some people running HAM..... My guess is that your group will be like most... GRMS. (I am running a midland 575 and am going to pick up a couple handhelds for trail spotting and for those that are unequipt.)

I went with a Midland XT275 kit with a Mountains2Metal under dash bracket, and then installed a marine style CAT6 port to plug in the handheld. Wired everything to AUX6. There are a few videos on YouTube of similar installations.

I did a short video of what it looks like on my Bronco:

Does the 275 have the aux speaker output? Have you had any issues with the speaker under the dash (muffled or otherwise)?.... Never checked... is there a speaker on the mic?

I also went with the Midland XT275, wired to AUX6, but I put the bracket into the center console and wired power and the longer antenna from there. This way, I can pop it out, use the provided adapter and small antenna in a different car temporarily. I also bought the GXT1000 pair of handhelds, so I can talk with a spotter and another vehicle from my XT275 (or use them for hiking, etc.). Worked perfectly when my sons joined me at Hidden Falls, TX and then I had more range when I drove to Moab solo.

There is a speaker on the mic hand unit. I turn off the sound at the base and use the mic speaker, but you can configure it the way you like.

We run with Arizona Bronco‘s also and they run the GMRS system. A nominal fee for your license and you are good to go. I use the handheld Midland which I bought on Amazon. Two units and a charger for I think around $40

There is a speaker on the handheld and base unit, however, the handheld unit speaker is off by default. You have to turn it on in the settings.

Thank you.... Good to know when helping others. I have an auxiliary speaker I mounted above the passenger visor. Fit perfectly. I think it is about 3 inch tall by about 5 inch wide by rugged radios. speaker points out to passenger cabin.

Thats one of the reasons I love this forum…. Have a question and many have answer/opinion thats helpful…

I recently bought the Baofeng GM-15 pro… did test run in country area and had good reception at 3 miles. Thats with trees and houses/barns along the way. Also have the FCC license.

Those are a solid choice @Chief Ron - I have a pair of those as well.

FYI - The long range Nagoya antenna is a great upgrade for added distance.
