Off-Road Mapping App Thread

I have OnX, AllTrails, TrailsOffroad, and Gaia. I have tried them all, and as best I can tell they all have some major limitation. For instance, OnX lets you download only a very small area at a time for offline use. What do people do to get around that?

In searching, I see a few threads where people have said, I like X, or I like Y, but I did not find any threads where people could talk through the limitations of X or Y.

Is there a thread here where people talk about these sorts of things?

That's a terrible idea, when do we start?

I may mess around with it and use it for the Colorado trip. It'll be a great way to compare the 2 platforms especially with these new features.

Yeah, the new features seem to put it on parity with OnX for the most part. Note that a lot of the waypoints for the mapping I did for Colorado came from there. I like them a lot for planning with the waypoints and pictures. I have been lobbying for those with OnX and they keep pushing back saying that they would take up too much space. frankly, I think that's BS, since TrailsOffroad does it. They just need a process when people upload the pictures to save them in a predefined format that doesn't take up a huge amount of space.

Edit - Just searched if they have offline maps and they seem to make it really easy. You can download an entire state and not just sections.

TrailsOffRoad is the first trail app I had/used. I REALLY liked getting whole states at once for offline use. As well, you can export a trail to Gaia if you want to use Gaia for the trail tracking. Since the maps in TrailsOffRoad do not show many non-trail features (such as road names/numbers), but Gaia does, I would have TrailsOffRoad send to Gaia, and then run the trail in Gaia. The waypoint notes from TrailsOffRoad show up as notes in Gaia. Gaia lets you select virtually any sized area to download for offline use. It has worked well for me, although getting trail info from TOR to Gaia can be iffy.

Having used onX for the past couple rides, I would say that except for the substandard offline map capability, onX has more features. And because SO many people seem to use onX it is easy to get help on using it...
