Hey Bronco Friends! I am getting started planning a trip to the Stanislaus National Forest, looking to hit Slick Rock, Deer Valley and Sour Grass and getting a night or two of camping in. I wanted to send out an invitation to our Bronco community to join. Kicking off the planning, initial thoughts are:
  • Proposed Dates: September 17th – 19th
  • Proposed Route:
    • Sour Grass – 9/17
    • Slick Rock – 9/18 (Utica Reservoir to Lake Alpine)
    • Deer Valley – 9/19 (Highway 4 to Lower Blue Lake)
Been wheelin’ for a few years now, but I have never run these trails. Feel free to PM me if you’re interested in going. I can facilitate a few conference calls if we want to do some pre-trip planning. If you can’t make it but have some experience on these trails let us know what to look for and any lessons learned there. Last item to note, we’re all trying to get through this pandemic, please wear a mask.

You will enjoy any of the trails mentioned but my favorite is Utica/Lake Alpine because of the rocks but looking at your rig you should have no issues. I will keep track of your posted dates and hopefully be joining your group. Bring some rain-snow gear for changing climate and prepare for the amazing scenery. No issue with masks for drivers or Broncos plus social distancing of 6 feet. I’m texting the crew at Wild Horses to see if there’s interest.

Are you proposing a Bronco only trip? If not, are those trails mild enough for a stock F150, 4x4, with limited slip in the rear? That's the best I've got until next year....

Randal can have his own say but I was not slating this as a Bronco only run especially since the Sierra Jeepers maintain most of the trails in Stanislaus County and have run across them doing repairs. The real issue is a full size rig with limited might get a little rock rash but hey I have also seen a stock Mazda Navajo on the Rubicon. What could possibly happen.

I was not thinking this trip would be exclusive to Broncos. I know there are a lot of Jeep, Toyota and truck guys/gals on this forum who are soon to be Bronco guys/gals. And as Trojan mentioned the local jeep clubs in that area have put a lot of work into keeping Slick Rock open to folks like us. Regarding what is required to get through these trails, I would have to defer to your best judgment and other's opinions. I have not run Slick Rock yet, but I know it's got spots similar to the Rubicon and I'm not sure what kind of options there are for bypasses. My DD is a F150 and I'd be hesitant to do more than a moderately difficult dirt road in it without at least throwing some larger tires on.

This would be an awesome trip. Sourgrass is pretty tame and is at a beautiful stretch of the N. Stanislaus, but not a long trail. Slick Rock is not to be taken lightly. Watch the video at about the 7:00 mark and again at 16:00. The new section at the top by Lake Alpine is very steep and full of large rocks. You need at least 33" tires and a 3"+ suspension lift, along with a short wheelbase like on a Bronco or a Jeep (longer wheel bases like on a full sized 4x4 are likely to have issues on high centering as well as turning radius). Definitely also need a few rigs with winches as well. My Bronco runs with 31" tires and a 2.5" lift and this is nowhere near enough for Slick Rock. I've never been to Deer Valley. There are also endless forest roads and interesting places to go all over this area.
