So just a couple of weeks ago Elizabeth and I went on a bucket list trip to the Historic North Rim Grand Canyon Lodge. We stayed in a quaint cabin near the lodge and took in the spectacular vistas and had an awesome Dark Sky experience. While there we also saw numerous points of interest, including Horseshoe Bend. On July 3rd a lightning strike started a forest fire north and west of the park. This past week all guests, employees and residents of the park were evacuated as there is only one rode in and out if the park. Unfortunately a second fire started in the area. I found out this morning that the historic lodge, residences, water treatment plant and a gas station were lost to the fire. This is the second time in the almost 100 years of the park that the lodge has been lost. It was rebuilt once and will be again, but in this day and age, nothing is ever the same. I pray that all of the residents in the surrounding area are safe. Let’s keep them all in our thoughts and prayers.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves. More importantly, that you were able to avoid any catastrophic destruction. Hopefully, the new Big Beautiful Bill will allow for the replacement of the lost facility. Oh, wait. Nevermind. Did the cabin you stayed in survive?
Chris here. I drive a 2-door Velocity Blue 2023 Ford Bronco Badlands with Sasquatch, Lux, a 2.7L V6, and an automatic transmission. It’s fun.

My guess is no. I fear that all of it is probably gone. I just saw that the visitors center, employee lodging and park superintendent residence are also gone

And the jobs lost, the people displaced, the opportunities for exploration and appreciation suspended, and the subsequent routines dismantled will probably require a while to recover. On the bright side, at least you were able to knock one item off your bucket list! I’m always one to see the bright side. 😉

Oh this is sad. That was on the list of places to explore. This will just postpone that trip a little. Hope all are safe. Also thinking of those in the recovery in the Hillcountry we are in a flood watch until tomorrow on the Guadalupe.

What is going on… the Grand Canyon is burning, flooding in New Mexico, Texas, and the East Coast. Oh and it is flooding in Texas again today (once in a lifetime?) just for the record a 100 year flood doesn’t mean it only happens once in 100 years, it means there is 100% chance that a flood of that magnitude will happen at least once in 100 years. It could happen several times in a 100 years.

I guess that while battling the fire, the water treatment plant burned and there was a big chlorine gas leak. They had to pull the fire fighters out.

Oh wow, that's a huge bummer. I knew there was a fire, but I thought it was up by Jacob Lake.

Never stayed at Grand Canyon Lodge personally, but north rim was always a popular spot for my family growing up in northern AZ. All of our yearly family Christmas trees came from the north rim area, and in general we always preferred north rim because it was far less crowded compared to south rim. Many occasions we passed by the Grand Canyon Lodge on our way to Cottonwood Campground and the Cape.

Small version of me running around Kaibab National Forest. Don't know exactly where, but good chance it was someone around the area that's burning. I really need to get back out there. Lockett Meadow is another one that has a ton of memories for me growing up, and it burned last year. 😧

So sad to hear. We visited the Grand Canyon in September 2021. The lodge and the whole place was amazing. The North Rim was my favorite spot, especially the 18 mile drive to Point Sublime. Here is a video of our time at the North Rim.
