Despite a daunting weather forecast, we set out to explore the newly reopened areas of Santiam State Forest in Oregon. Our first stop was Butte Creek Falls, both cascades flowing vibrantly thanks to recent rainfall. From there, we continued to Rhody Lake, an area recently accessible again after the 2020 wildfires. The journey presented its share of obstacles. Downed trees don't stop five motivated guys. The highlight was the rocky, steep ascent to Lookout Mountain. Several of us commented on how the Broncos just glide over the big rocks. We faced fierce 50+ mph winds and pelting hail. Yet the experience was a blast, and some of us even climbed the tower. We concluded our adventure at Fibre Falls before heading toward Panther Rock. The day was filled with unexpected challenges and rewards, and proved that even in the face of unfavorable weather, exploring the wilderness can be deeply fulfilling. So stop looking at the forecast and get out there. Actually look at the forecast so you know what to wear.
