My folks... Any trails (off-road) suggestions while visiting the Grand Canyon?

There are some excellent off-road road trails near the Grand Canyon. Take a look at the National Park Service website. You will find many!

I haven't been there, but I understand the North Rim has lots more to offer than the South Rim, which is heavy on tourist traffic. Being a National Park, I wouldn't expect much in obstacles.

North Rim is closed until mid or late May. The wife and I are going there in June.

A quick look in onX shows a TON of trails.. There are numerous trails that are already mapped that will have trail descriptions and photos. There are plenty of unmapped trails if you are feeling adventurous..

Looks like a lot of the trails that are close are in the Kaibab National Forest.

I'd suggest you download onX and check out the areas trails. The trails already mapped will have a trail description and photos to help you decide if you'd like to do it. The Green marked trails are easy and Blue marked trails are moderate on the map below.

Oh, you're making itch! I've hiked the Canyon twice: 1964, 1984, and (at 77) maybe one last hurrah? I'm thinking: backroad & trail to the North Rim and park. Ground trans to the South Rim, overnight at the lodge, then hike down the Bright Angel Trail and up the Kaibab Trail to the North Rim? Or the other way around?

Last October we were in the Black Hills and stopped at the USFS office and probably got the best maps and trail info we've ever gotten. I will always stop at those offices from now on. If there's an office near your destination check it out.
We'll do it again in Colorado in September.

The National Parks Service website is loaded with park info and is a great place to start — https://www.nps.gov/index.htm.

If you happen to be going this month, National Park Week is happening April 19 to April 27 to celebrate everything "parks." Entrance fees to national parks are waived on April 19, 2025, to kick off the celebration.

FYI, if Bronco Nation members are planning a National Park Trip this year, other upcoming Free Admission Days for 2025 are:
  • June 19: Juneteenth National Independence Day
  • August 4: Anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act
  • September 27: National Public Lands Day
  • November 11: Veterans Day
Good luck and have fun!

The National Park Service app is ridiculously awesome and absolutely free. It is totally worth installing and using to help plan your park, national monument or national forest visit.

I'm planning a trip in June and have been researching this same topic. I have used OnX to see the trails and the NPS app which has great information. I'm thinking of doing the on road south rim desert view drive one day and do an off road north rim drive in point sublime trail on another day.
