Fall Day on Colorado's Switzerland Trail

Today we went to Switzerland! LOL, Switzerland Trail's another late 1800s railroad route built for mining transport, and back then well-to-do sightseers too.

Sunset's a very small mtn community along this trail. There's a more direct dirt road for the residents there. Also, we plan to visit Gold Hill, another small mtn town who's general store's famous for its homemade pies & chocolate chip cookies - Yummm!

We had pretty wet spring & summer, but this fall has been really dry - So, no fires today!! Also, lots of campsite and a few residences along this trail - No shoot 'en either..

It's easy wheeling, about 14 miles topping at just over 9,000ft elevation.

Sunset a very quite little 'holler' up Fourmile Canyon, today with maybe 4 or 5 homes. Looks like there's power and we see propane tanks for heat.

You know you're on a railroad grade when the trail runs thru these narrow rock outcrop cuts. We saw 8 or 10 of these today - Thank You old-timers!!

About midway the fireplace & chimney remain of what was the railroad's rest station. Today it's called Mount Alto Picnic area.

Easy trail, for our Defender acquaintance's 1st wheeling adventure. His Mom drives a Bronco Badlands and Dad has a Raptor..

Looks like some pine beetle damage over there.

And of course, there's the usual knucklehead debris along this trail too.

Switzerland Trail's fun and open most of the year, which is unusual here. Yeah, our high mtn trails usually close by November 'til late June or July. So, I'm sure we'll visit Switzerland again soon. Right now, we're going for some Gold Hill Pie!!

Cheers

Gold Hill's a neat, some would say even eccentric mtn community. Its general store usually has live music on Friday nights, frequent arts & craft shows and great pies & chocolate cookies everyday!

Here's the trail's entry and the town's only school.

Am guessing Gold Hills population is at least several hundred.

The general store is this town's counterpoint and well worth a visit.

Yeah, sure did! Easy trail that our Bronco handled with absolutely NO drama. We did air down to 20psi for smoother ride. Thanks to FoMoCo for making our very capable horsey! It's making our old memories new again.

Here's a pic of Switzerland railroad's 1894 passengers enjoying this popular trip that got it's name from the beautiful views along the route. You can see the massive snow cut on the left. The winter of 1894/95 filled these mountains with a deep snowpack.

Unfortunately, that was followed with a very wet spring creating huge run-off floods destroying much of this rail grade. That destruction along with a crash in silver prices were major setbacks for the rail biz in these canyons.

Here're pics of the ~1898 Mt Alto Pavilion and some history from Boulder Public Library's website.

The current site.

"Mont Alto was a resort site developed by the Colorado & Northwestern Railroad. It opened July 15, 1898. It was popular for all-day picnics, evening dances, and moonlight excursions. It was abandoned after the completion of the Eldora branch and the pavilion was taken down and transported in sections to Glacier Lake before the opening of the tourist season in 1905."

LOL - Yeah sharp eye there my friend!! I see several of my fav bottles are almost drained too. Heck, they even have a liter bottle of Weller 12. I've only seen one of those liter bottles before - It's in our stash.

Yep, the choices were interesting, to say the least — considering the location. I would almost be tempted to try a drink if I was staying the night. 😋

Also, there’s like a number of mementoes tacked to the bar. You might want to add to it by printing the shoplady’s photo and mailing it to the store. 🙂

Yeah, l like your suggestion, am thinking about future visit with perhaps memorable items for their collection.

You see, old bagpiper here with numerious piper elements who’s novelity may entice their interest.

Sure, that photo of dozen kilted pipers showing their full moons would be uniquely memorable, but probably couldn’t get permission from every hiney involved.

We’ll come up with something though..
