Bronco gave wifey & I a spirited drive (Speed limit +) across Colorado's mtns to Moab today. It's a mild sunny day & light traffic - Reminds us of the 'old days' here!

Really good snow pack for early December this year.

Lake Dillon at sunrise.

Entry to I-70's 10 Mile Canyon aka Officers Canyon and yes, we saw 3 Co Highway Patrol along this stretch.

Copper Mtn Ski at sunrise

And of course, I-70's Glenwood Canyon was beautiful!!

We really enjoyed our home coming Moab Bronco Off-Roadeo Basecamp (Class of Feb '24) visit, finding a poster with our original '78 Bronco's colors.

Very much a workday there - Blake's busy in the car wash shed, Jamie & Erica were touring a full group on Dome Plateau trails.

After 5 hour road trip, time to stretch our legs - Moab has tons of great hiking options too.

Cheers

So this looks like a great time to visit Moab? Cooler weather, not a lot of snow or muddy trails, good time to hike, and not a lot of people...Yes or No!

Yeah, we like off season Moab! Gotta be mindful of weather, but much less Nat'l Park, highway, trail, etc. congestion, pleasent temps, today's hight in low 40s and reduced lodging $ rates.

FYI, Moab isn't without highway drama. Moab's pedestrians crossing Main Street, Highway 191 is definitely a 'Danger Zone". Yesterday, a lady got nailed by a vehicle while crossing with the light at a crosswalk. Sadly, she had serious injurers and transported to hospital by EMP truck. The GearHeads Outdoor guys told us it's a big problem on that busy highway - To be VERY carful!

Also, even though Moab hasn't seen snow in almost 2 weeks, there's still nightly heavy frost, with icy morning roads in shady road sections. Yesterday, we saw a Jeep slide off HW128 blowing out both driverside tires loading on a wrecker. This morning driving north on HW131, we passed a super duty pulling a pretty big trailer sliding sideways down the icy south bound lanes in a shady section near Arches NP's entry - Yeah ,CRAZY!!

We're staying in Castle Valley off HW128 near the Colorado River's canyon and Bronco Off-Roadeo Basecamp, it's some 17miles north of Moab. We saw wild turkey early visitors

Today, we visited Dead Horse Point & Canyonlands' Island in the Sky parks. These nearby parks have spectacular overviews and a totally chill vib we greatly enjoyed. Pics never do 'em justice:

Kenneth...Thanks for the info. I will have to plan a trip next year this time. I like less folks and cold temps. Spend my winters hiking in the snow. Merry Christmas!!

Another beautiful Moab day in the 40s. Great time for Hurrah Pass/Chicken Corners trails. Trailhead's just west of town at the end of Kane Creek drive, Easy - Peasy!

Hurrah Pass trail starts following Kane Creek, a tributary to Colorado River. Once over Hurrah Pass, the trail winds down to the Colorado River basin and Chichren Corners Trail. This terrain is just south and across the Colorado river from the Potash/Shafer Trail we saw from above yesterday.

We loved the Kane Creek trail section's deep canyon, green streamside trees & schrubs - Very cool!!
IMG_3879.jpegIMG_3887.jpeg
11 o'clock and the trail still has thick frost in the shade.
IMG_3881.jpeg
As we climb above Kane Creek the trail gives us some fun twists.
IMG_3907.jpegIMG_3908.jpegIMG_3909.jpeg
We're continuously WOWed by the terrain here!!
IMG_3946.jpegIMG_4003.jpegIMG_3984.jpegIMG_3914.jpegIMG_3986.jpeg
And interesting trail features, not difficult just wants your close attention.
IMG_3972.jpegIMG_3966.jpegIMG_3979.jpegGreat day - Luv our ride too!!

I'm bringing a couple of chutes this trip. If you are up to it then maybe I am too...who knows maybe we will be base jumping and overlanding for the next twenty years....

Our last Moab day's in Arches Nat'l Pk - Great views, nice hike and spectacular off-road trail! Arches NP's famious for it's rock formations. Well, it's terrific 14.5 mile Tower Arch off-road trail that's accessed by a ripping 7 mile dirt/gravel road is a total BLAST!!

FunTreks rates Tower Arch as difficult and we can confirm there are several butt clenching rock elements that Bronco survived intact. I'll note that a stock OEM rear bumper may not.

Early morning snow showers gave us crisp air and a nice contrast on Moab's beautiful mesas.
IMG_4029.jpeg
We hiked the mile or so loop around Windows Arches area.
IMG_4055.jpegIMG_4038.jpeg
Then, we're off to Arches''Unimproved Road' aka gravelroad that's very well maintained.
IMG_4061.jpegIMG_4069.jpeg
Friendly chat with this grader operator, said he hardly ever sees peeps out on this road. We thanked 'em for such a well maintained surface.
IMG_4070.jpeg
Yes of course - BAJA Mode HAULs ARSE!!
IMG_4071.jpeg
Tower Arch trail's a fun mix of deep sand, clay whoops/tristys/hills/dips and difficult rock ledges. Wifey said this was very like our Bronco Off-Roadeo experience trail. - She luved it!
IMG_4082.jpegIMG_4087.jpegIMG_4107.jpegIMG_4110.jpegIMG_4118.jpegIMG_4117.jpeg
IMG_4109.jpeg
IMG_4125.jpeg
This trail was great fun that wifey really enjoyed. There're NO height exposures, so it's all fun & excitement - NO dizzying exposures fears - All GOOD!!
