These high Colorado mtn trails don't wait for a calendar's fall declaration, so we headed up above historic Georgetown on a very twisty Guanella Pass Rd. to Argentine Pass trailhead. About an hour west of Denver on I-70, Guanella Pass itself's well worth a visit.

The trail starts very rocky as a gate-keeper warning to Subarus & such, but the Aspen trees are warmly welcoming all adventurers today.

And as we climb above treeline, the color is just as intense.

6 miles up the trail, we arrive at the old Waldorf town site, once location of the highest US Post Office!

We had an Jeeper's audience for these rocks, said "that Bronco came over that like it was nothing'!! Thanks to Bronco's tight turn radius & rear lockers, steering a 'S' pattern cleared these rocks without too much drama - And no damage!

Did get a little steep up here!

Couple tight switchbacks and careful tire placement through the tire-biters, and we were on top - With a 40-50mph wind blasting over the ridge!!

Just over Bronco's hood, the two peaks on the left are couple of Colorado's >14k ft mtn peaks, Grays & Torreys.

But the weather's quickly changing, and we really shouldn't over-stay our welcome up here. Besides the Jeep audience mentioned above, we passed only 2 side-by-sides & a motorcycle dirt bike above Waldorf - No other 4-wheelers.

Wheeling Argentine Pass trail demands your close attention, and our Bronco once again proves it's robust capabilities - Great FUN too!!

No worries, we greatly enjoyed the trail. And historic Georgetown's fun too. A ride on their old steam engine narrow-gauge railroad's high trestle turn or visit that incredible candy shop on the right!
IMG_3187.jpegIMG_3188.jpeg
Or breakfast at the Happy Cooker - All too good!! Oh, no Sir, relax - We're NOT gonna take away your ice cream!!
IMG_3185.jpeg
Several of Georgetown's Victorian era homes are very nicely maintained too.

What a feast for the eyes--and palate! Great writeup.
October 4 I'll be in Vermont, so I'll post foliage and trail images. Nothing like 13K feet, but those Green Mountains have some very tricky trails. And we'll have to see how your stunning yellow aspens compare to New England sugar maples.

Yeah, looking forward to seeing some New England fall splendor too!

Old town probably hasn’t changed much. Like everywhere else, there’s a lot residential building up north near the lake.

Thank you for the post. The photos are incredible and I'm sure they don't even compare to the being there.
Looked like one heck of a great time.

Just spectacular!

Thanks! Actually, this pass is probably a little TOO spectacular for wifey. Cindy was uncomfortable at the top, saying - This is too high!!

At 13,234ft elevation, Argentine Pass small'ish ridge area is some 3,000ft above the Peru Creek drainage below. Sure, we've climbed several 14ers together, but scrambling up Longs Peak's rocky narrows at ~13,900ft has a different pucker-factor vs riding shotgun with only our Bronco's 4 wheels on the ground.

Perhaps she'll drive next time we're heading up there..

Great write up - and completely understand your wife being a little anxious. Angie usually bails out on certain trails in San Juans. Im a good guy and will typically slow down for her exit 🤣.

Thanks for sharing. Can never get enough of Colorado high country!

Bronco's at the dealership, so yesterday Cindy & I hiked up to Silver Dollar Lake. It's about 5 miles round trip, climbs over 1,000ft to just under 12,000ft. Great weather, calm winds, temps 60s at trailhead & 50s on top.
