Wherever you go, there you are!

I have been using a Ignik Firecan on my camping and off-road trips and while I have been happy with it, I originally wanted a Howl Campfire unit. The problem was all they made was a large, and heavy R4 model. That model costs $1,300... Yikes and nope!

A few months ago they announced the Howl R1 and I ordered it right away. The R1 is a smaller version that clocks in at $350 (for now - a price increase is scheduled to take place 2-weeks from today)... The price in 2 weeks will rise to $395 for the R1..

Howl is well known for quality and craftsmanship but I was not about to pay $1,300 for a fire pit..

My R1 arrived today and the fit and finish is outstanding! They are hand made in Colorado, USA and it comes with a propane hose that has a built in regulator..

If you want what might be the best fire pit on the planet, get one before the price goes up. Since they are hand made here in the USA, it will take a month or more for you to actually get it once ordered..

Stock images for now. I'll post real images after my trip next week..

I was SUPER impressed with their R4 units, but as you said... expensive and large.

Excited for the R1 but ultimately opted against it since it didn't come with the barcoal feature. What I'd really like is something in-between the R1 and R4. Perhaps something like an R2 or R3.

I don't really camp in very cold conditions so the barcoal feature is not something I'd seek out. For those who do, or want heat while stargazing, the barcoal feature would be awesome to provide heat without the fire..

For me a fire pit is more about having a fire to relax by in the morning and evening and provide some heat. More and more places are implementing fire bans but a propane fire pit is still allowed.

Oh yeah, if I still lived in the southwest where they frequently have long no-burn periods due to drought, I think the R1 would be perfect.

No-burns are rare up in New England though, 90% of the time I could just build a normal fire. Howl for me would be more for camping in the late fall/early spring, or when it is so damp/rainy that it becomes huge pain to build a fire. But the R4 is just too bulky the way it is right now.

Not really the size or the weight of the R4 that turns me off as I could easily just toss it in my camper, it's the price.. No way, no how I'd pay $1,300 for a fire pit, no matter how good it is..
