Any cast iron freaks in here? I cook almost exclusively with cast iron, pans, dutch ovens, outdoors, indoors, over an open fire, on the kitchen stove, in the oven, or over coals. Anyone else prefer the original non-stick pan?

I’m looking to add a cast iron pan/dutch oven to my camping gear. What cast iron pans do you pack when you go on a weekend camping trip?

I have a lot of cast iron, so it depends, but these are my go-to pieces. I use dutch ovens with legs for camping (works for cooking outdoors, as well as a camp stove). You can flip the lid over and use it as a skillet.

10.25" skillet

4 quart dutch oven

Here is a versatile tool, which allows me to also use the DO lid as a skillet (flipped over and set over coals)

I've got cast iron pans and a griddle that are older than any two of us put together. Older the better, the quality of the pans back then was judged by how smooth they were. Gave a pan to my son that is worth well over $200. I paid ~$5 for it in the '80's... Griswold...

Yes sir, that is a quality looking sandwich. I also like grilling mine with teriyaki and pineapple rings on a sandwich with bacon.

There are very few (non-living) objects I love, but one of them is my cast iron. That said, I do not use it with my camping gear for the sole purpose of weight savings.

Haven't tried carbon steel, but if it’s lighter than cast iron I may take a peek.

Since I take a trailer when I camp I take along my 10” Lodge frying pan and either the 12 or 14” DO. I learned that a pre-seasoned pan can get ruined if the first thing you cook in it is Spaghetti sauce the acid in the tomatoes will eat the seasoning. but after 17 years of seasoning I can cook anything I want in that pan. I use almost every day.

I have several pieces, maybe more, of enameled cast iron. It's great and Le Creuset is one of the finest.

CI is definitely not backpacking stuff, but if I'm camping out of a vehicle, I'll always have a couple pieces (usually an 8" DO and 8" skillet).

If you can cook it, you can cook it better in cast iron and if it's worth eating, it's worth cooking in cast iron.
