Car fridge that fits length wise in the 2dr rear cargo area with rear seats up

In the past, I have generally only use a Yeti cooler for my camping trips. Having a 2dr means limited cargo space so a small'ish Yeti cooler easily fit and carried enough to get by.

A company recently sent me a free car fridge for review (why me? No clue - but they did).. It worked great but it was a bit to large for my little 2dr, especially when tossing all my camping gear in my topless 2dr Bronco.

Here is a shot of the one I received and how much of the rear cargo space it occupied. Once I also put my battery power bank back there, the entire rear cargo area was pretty much taken up.

Using the car fridge -v- the cooler was awesome so I began my hunt for something that would fit length wise, thus freeing up additional space in the cargo area.

I came across the Dometic CFX3 25 Liter fridge. The only bummer is the one above is a dual zone and the Dometic is a single zone. Fine by me, I don't need Ice Cream anyways, I guess...

Checking measurements for the 2dr cargo area and the Dometic fridge still said it was a no go. However they also list the size without the handles so I figured I'd give it a shot as it was close. The fridge is pretty lightweight and I don't really plan on taking it out of the Bronco when out camping so the only real need I have for handles would be to carry it to the Bronco at the start of my trip and out of the Bronco after the trip.

Since it's fairly small and lightweight, it's easy to carry short distances without the handles. If you wanted you could always bring the handles and take them off / put them on as needed as it's 4ea 5mm screws holding the handles onto the fridge.

It takes no force to close the tailgate and the fridge has about a millimeter or so of space between the front of it and the tailgate when closed. I assume if you have a tailgate table then this is not going to work.

Here are a few shots of it in the cargo area with the handles off.

The only other drawback is that the lid does not open fully due to the angle of the rear pass seat. It opens enough to get items out easily but it won't open fully. However, if I need to open it fully, all I need to do is release tension of the tie down strap and slide the fridge forward about 1".

I got it on sale for 20% off of the price, so while it was still kind of pricy, it was not as bad as it could have been.

The fridge in the 1st photo took up about 26.5"ร—17.3"ร—18" (8155 cubic inches) of space. The Dometic CFX3 25L takes up about 22.4"x13.2"x16.5" (4878 cubic inches). Taking the handles off the Dometic makes the size 19.8"x13.2"x16.5" (4312 cubic inches). While that might not sound like a lot, every inch (and cubic inch) counts in the 2dr. Even more so since I roll topless.

Anyways, thought I'd share for anyone who has been looking for a similar option. Going this route, has freed up some valuable space in cargo area in the 2dr.

Here are a few shots with the handles on and in a different orientation. In this configuration I have room for my Maxtrax Mini Traction Boards behind the fridge, the battery power bank (behind the backpack) and a backpack carrying first aid, small axe/saw combo, a shovel and an emergency tire repair kit. I didn't have room or space for the traction boards with the previous fridge so I left them sitting on the rear seats.

I still have some room between the front of the fridge and my Power Tank where I can fit my folding camp table, or my recovery and power tank gear, or my larger backpack that holds all my clothes. The lid will now fully open.

Not sure what configuration I'll use but it's nice to have options.

I don't drink.. Well okay, I usually have one beer at night by the fire after off-roading all day on my overnight camping trips.

Slim Jims? Noooooooooooo! Get these: Tillamook Beef Sticks ๐Ÿ‘€

The handles are easy enough to take off but I'd worry that repeatedly doing that might eventually strip them or cause other issues. I don't really need the handles but I suppose they are nice to have on. Not sure which configuration I'll use. I'll need to test load all my camping gear in each config and decide which I want to use.. It is nice knowing it will fit end to end if needed / wanted..

They make rootbeer in kegs that fit kegerators, I don't drink either.
Space wise isn't much of a problem for me as the back seats are a delete item. But saving space in a 2 door is mandatory.

I really wish the one in the 1st photo was smaller as I could have saved some cash but it is what it is.. My last trip was my 1st time using a car fridge and I am sold on them over a cooler. Don't think I can ever go back to an ice filled cooler now.

I test loaded all the gear I bring on camping trips this morning and I actually think I'll put the handles back on and use it in the sideways config. I have been considering a tailgate table and one won't fit if I config the fridge front to back.

With the smaller overall size I was able to fit these additional items in the rear cargo area that I could not fit with the larger fridge.

  • Mini Traction Boards
  • Recovery Gear Bag
  • Power Tank Gear Bag
  • Large Backpack

Well that didn't last long...

Plugged the fridge in this morning to get it up to temps as I was going to head out for a quick day on the trails and wanted to load it up with some drinks.

It sounded like an old jalopy rolling down the road every time the compressor kicked on.. Once it reached temps the compressor would only stay off for a few minutes before it fired back up. I assumed this was not normal.

Scrapped my off-road plans and contacted support. Long story short, after speaking with customer support, it's going back. They offered a replacement but I am not willing to roll the dice again. So now I am back on the hunt for a small car fridge.

The other option I was previously considering was the Iceco GO20. It's a dual zone, about the same size as the Dometic and a little cheaper as well..

Wow Dometic is one of the Big names I am surprised it has issues but good to hear they are trying to make it right. I have been kicking around the BougeRV brand to put in my Teardrop/Squaredrop they seem to have great reviews and they are reasonably priced. I just don't know if they carry a duel zone as small as you need.
And ice cream on the trail, Yes please.

Yeah, it happens. I'm not going to hold it against them, other than not getting a replacement from them, as Dometic has pretty high ratings. Mine was a lemon and I usually don't give a company a 2nd chance.

Think I'll order the IceCo G20. I have a 25% off code that I can use and that puts the price down to a reasonable amount.

I do not think the IceCo GO20 will fit front to back (like shown in the OP) as it's the same size in that dimension as the Dometic but there are no handles on it to remove.

This all started because I was happy with the fridge I was sent to review. Before that I was content with using my Yeti cooler. After having a car fridge on my last camping trip, I don't think I can ever go back to a cooler.

Thanks for this. I am very interested in your review of these two products and the next one you try. I don't feel I need the dual zone, I gut want a good one that works.

I am sure the Dometic would be fine, they generally get great reviews, and I probably should give them a 2nd chance but I think I'll order the IceCo. People with a 4dr can do as they please but the struggle is real for us 2dr peeps..

Dual zone is nice if you want to bring some ice cream for those super hot days. I doubt I'd use the freezer area for anything other than that.. With the IceCo you can remove the divider and make the whole thing a fridge, or a freezer if you want.. I'll probably leave it in dual zone mode as I do like me some ice cream!

Alright, you got me, order placed for a 5 pack.

I am a sucker for beef sticks that don't have hearts, lungs, livers, feet, toenails, and all that other junk some brands put in their sticks.

I ordered from Amazon as the company website wanted $13 to ship the $15 worth of product..

I assume mine was just bad luck / bad unit as you are right, they have very good reviews. I ordered it from Backcountry as they had it on sale for 20% off. No telling how long it had been sitting in their warehouse maybe getting moved and bounced around while there. Backcountry was great and after a little trouble shooting on the phone I got an email with the return label almost instantly.

And absolutely YES to ice cream on the trail! ๐Ÿ˜

The 28 quart would be way to large for the 2dr. The Wolfbox I was given for review is about that same size and it takes up almost the entire rear cargo area once you put a battery pack back there.

The 16 quart is larger than the IceCo Go20 and holds less..

Unelated comment: These companies crack me up with their marketing photos though. Not just this ad as they all do it..

Here is a product image for the 16 quart. Those cans must be the 'super-duper-extra-tall-boy' cans. But how am I gonna close the lid if they stick up that far? ๐Ÿ˜œ

I'm wondering if they will work well in the bed of my pickup.
I have a bed cover so it's not in direct sunlight.
My yeti keeps my drinks cold on an Arizona summer day.

We used the yeti in Moab in the back of the bronco and we should have repacked it daily for better results. And got me thinking about these refrigerators.

I don't see why they would not work as long as you have a way to strap it down and secure it. For power you could just use a battery power bank like a Jackery, Bluetti, or Ecoflow. That would also need to be strapped down. I've seen tests where a 800'ish Wh battery pack can run these small car fridges for 3-4 days under the right conditions.
