Im curious "what" chips are actually short. There is more than 1 way to build a computer system, you just have to adapt a little bit. Home pc builders would recognize, hey I cant get an intel processor... Get an AMD instead. Cant get DDR5? Get DDR4. I get it's not exactly the same for integrated systems but sheesh. There are hundreds of fabs in the US. Im sure Ford could contract with more than one (hyperoble) after 2 years of continual supply problems.

Read this earlier this morning. Doesn't bode well for waiting orders and future production. Some of us late to the party folks might be waiting until 2024

I mean, thats obvious, but as a software developer, there's really no reason for it. Tesla figured it out. Ex https://insideevs.com/news/558871/tesla-overcomes-supply-issues-prevails/

Cars arent medical devices where the FDA has to vet every single tiny hardware/software change you make. If it doesn't work this way, they're either not willing to do it, don't have the capacity to test new things (gasp), or contractually obligated not to.

I don't think it's impossible, it's just impossible to do it quickly.
I would hope they have been working on the use of a newer more readily available chip for quite some time.

the problem the auto makers are facing is they use a older style chip that is to large for most modern electronics they have stuck with them due to there ruggedness the computers in cars live in a brutal environment

Outside of the obvious constraints for chip physical size and configuration, the suppliers have to meet supplier requirements. Most chip makers will not meet supplier requirements.

The only incentive they have to actually make changes is if people cancel their orders, which, I haven't heard one person doing. So, even after a year (or more) of waiting, I don't think anyone is really that upset. I'm looking forward to my Bronco which is looking like an April delivery. But if it goes to May... June.. oh well!

Nice. Yeah we get it. Ford is bad and you've been wronged. Blah blah blah........
We've all heard it before. Not sure why some feel like they need to interject their negative opinion when it has nothing to do with contributing to the original thread. Hope all the hate is somehow making you feel better and making everything right in your world.
Have a great weekend.

I think only the dealership can cancel the order. Why would they when they can have it sitting on their lot when it's built. That's why people are not choosing this option. I wouldn't. That's how I see it, no one has to agree. And, I might be completely wrong!
