It’s one thing to check out the King of the Hammers Edition Ford Bronco by FOX Factory Performance Vehicle Development while it’s parked, taking in the special badging, graphics, and accessories by Rage 4th, Metalcloak, Nacho, and more.
It’s fully another to watch it be ripped across the desert by three-time KOH winner and build partner Jason Scherer, going 80 mph+ without breaking a sweat.
That effortlessness apparently translates to behind the wheel. Scherer, while stopping to let the rest of the group Jordan and I were in catch up, laughed when we mentioned our speed. He said he hadn’t checked the speedometer and was driving by feel alone.
Clearly, the custom-designed and extreme-tested upgrade package on this Outer Banks was doing the trick in Johnson Valley’s whoops, dunes, and washes.
Off-Road Performance Inspired by Race Broncos
The backstory: Jordan and I were out on a Sunday morning drive with Scherer, the FOX Factory team, and a few other Broncos and owners. To close out KOH ’23, Jason had invited the community to come experience running a portion of the race course.
Scherer was in one of the three King of the Hammers Edition Broncos revealed at the event, which were created to mimic the 4600 class Broncos that have swept the podium two years in a row.
The BN team had spent time with the soft-topped Big Bend version earlier in the week –– check out our walkaround video below –– and this meetup was a great opportunity to see both that Bronco and the 4-door hard top Outer Banks Scherer was driving in action.
It was also a fun chance to do a completely unscientific comparison of the KOH Edition upgrade package and some of the factory High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension systems and configurations. Jordan and I were in a HOSS 4.0 Bronco Raptor, and our group had a 2.0 Wildtrak and non-SAS Badlands with us as well.
All Broncos did great, but from appearances, the Raptor and Scherer’s KOH Edition Bronco were nearly neck and neck in handling the whoops at speed –– albeit we were governed, and Scherer IS an off-road champion. Still, mark me down as impressed.
Let’s get into what makes this special-edition upgrade so great, components of the package, and details on how you can get one of these very limited King of the Hammers Edition Broncos for yourself.
The Build Sheet
The King of the Hammers Edition Bronco is built off of new Broncos and distributed to partnering dealers. The upgrade package, backed with a full 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and serviceable at any dealer, is designed to keep your Bronco light and fast while offering on-road comfort and plenty of durability. If you want to use your Bronco as a daily driver but like to get out on aggressive trails and do moderate rock crawling, this upgrade is for you.
"The King of the Hammers Edition Bronco isn't just a graphics package, it's a performance-based vehicle that has been tested and perfected for over a year," said Scherer. "Throughout the testing phase, we spent days in the desert driving on the toughest of trails to driving on the pavement to a coffee shop so we could properly tune the FOX 2.5 Performance Elite Shocks to ensure its capable on and off road."
And as you can guess from our personal experience above, the FOX 2.5 Performance Elite Shocks tuned by Scherer are some of the stars of the show. Other components focus on hitting Scherer’s goal of nimble and fast, including the lightest beadlock-capable combo of wheels and 37” tires on the market.
