If you’re going to be placing an order for a 2023 Bronco on Monday, it’s best that you get your picks to your dealer ASAP. If choosing an engine is holding you up, check out this simple comparison of the two EcoBoost engines Ford offers for Bronco models (other than Raptor).

Bronco 2.3 vs. 2.7-Which One Should I Get?

For 2023 editions, nearly any Bronco trim comes with the option for either engine, except the Wildtrak (which always has the 2.7L).

There are a few other situations where you’re limited to one engine choice, but none apply to decision-making for next week.

  • Heritage Limited only has the 2.7L (but customers can’t ever order an HL).
  • Everglades only comes with the 2.3L (but you won’t be able to order an Everglades).
  • Ford only pairs the 7-speed trans with the 2.3L engine (but you won’t be able to order a manual transmission).

Importantly, neither engine will keep you from enjoying a Bronco; full stop. The 2.3L will have you climbing rocks and cruising along highways absolutely fine. Drive a 2.7L, though, and most people notice a difference in feel. However, that doesn’t mean the 2.7 is the engine for everyone.

Let’s explore some of the benefits of both engines and why you might consider one over the other, broken down broadly for the average owner –– gearheads, you already know why you want you want!

The 2.3L EcoBoost Engine

Stats: With this direct-injection engine, you’re looking at 275 hp/315 lb-ft of torque (regular fuel) or 300 hp/325 lb-ft of torque (premium fuel). For more power, a Ford Performance 2.3L calibration is available for 21-22MY Broncos.

The 2.3L may benefit from adding a catch can, but you’ll hear both sides of the debate.

Benefits

  • Plenty of engine for daily driving and trails
  • Better MPG by a few digits
  • Costs and weighs less, meaning more money for modifications plus room to do so before weighing down your vehicle

The 2.7L EcoBoost Engine

2.7L EcoBoost engine, Bronco

Stats: With this port-fuel/direct-injection (PFDI) engine, you’re looking at 315 hp/410 lb-ft of torque (regular fuel) or 330 hp/415 lb-ft of torque (premium fuel). For more power, a Ford Performance 2.7L calibration is available for 21-22MY Broncos.

The 2.7L did go through a period of trouble in the 21MY, but concern and reports of failures seem to have tapered off since then.

Benefits

  • Great for people who like a zippier response from the throttle
  • Good for people upsizing tires
  • Better for towing

Making the Choice

For much of Bronco’s production, the 2.7L engine has been one of the “deadly sins,” meaning if you had it on your order, you were waiting much longer than those with the 2.3L. The 2.7L has been more popular with order holders, forcing this constraint, but again, many people may not need, or miss, having this engine in their Bronco (Forum users have laughingly admitted to getting the 2.7 because who doesn't wants more –– but having the 2.3L is nothing to keep hidden!).

While Ford isn’t calling the 2.7L a no-go for Monday, the engine, being so popular in the past, may hold up your order at some point. Without fail, the 2.3L has been easier to get –– something to keep in mind if you want your vehicle quickly.
