This week, news broke that more than 148,000 Broncos are the focus of an upcoming recall. The targeted part is the rear shocks on certain vehicles.

Need to Know

On Tuesday, dealers received advance notice of Ford’s safety recall 25S01 (NHTSA recall number to come). Details include the problem –– the rear shock absorbers may corrode, causing the external reservoir to detach and become a road hazard –– and the Broncos affected: 2- and 4-doors produced between Sept. 23, 2020, and July 23, 2024.

This recall addresses a familiar problem for owners who frequent Bronco forums and Facebook groups: finding fluid leaks near the rear wheels or seeing one of their reservoirs from their shocks on the ground under their vehicle.

You can check to see if your vehicle is affected by entering your VIN on Ford.com or NHTSA. You may also see it on your FordPass app under Recalls.

The Fix

Parts are not yet available. When the remedy becomes available, Ford will notify owners via mail to schedule a service appointment with your dealer for repairs. There will be no charge to the customer. The remedy is anticipated to be available Q3 2025.

While there is a new vehicle demonstration/delivery hold for affected vehicles, Ford does not advise owners to stop driving their Bronco. In the meantime, periodic checks under your vehicle can confirm your reservoirs are still attached. You’ll also know by how the vehicle drives. If you've experienced a failure, hitting bumps can make your Bronco “buck” and have different handling.

In addition to the Bronco’s rear shock absorber external reservoir corrosion recall, news that 272,817 Bronco Sports and Mavericks are being recalled for battery failure has made headlines today.

Need to Know

Ford’s 25S02 recall (NHTSA 25V019) notice was sent to customers on January 17, 2025, alerting them that the 12-volt battery supplied by Camel in their 2021-2023 Sport may suddenly degrade due to internal weld or cast-on strap failures. If the battery degrades, your Sport may not restart during auto start/stop, and you may lose all electrical accessories.

Like the Bronco recall, Ford has not issued a “do not drive.” You can check to see if your vehicle is affected by entering your VIN on Ford.com or NHTSA, or by looking under the Recalls section on your FordPass app.
