Ford issued a recall for more than 500,000 U.S. Bronco Sports and Escapes last week. Though the risk of failure is low, a cracked fuel injector could cause a fire in the engine compartment while the engine is running.

Need to Know

The recall (22S73) involves 2021-2023 Bronco Sports with the 1.5L engine. The fuel injector can crack, and leaking fuel could start a fire under the hood. Ford is directing owners to have their dealership inspect for a cracked fuel injector.

“Taking care of our customers who are affected by this potential issue is our utmost priority,” said Jim Azzouz, Executive Director, Global CX Products & Customer Relations. “Once the repair is available, we will ask customers to schedule service with their preferred dealer. They can then take advantage of our complimentary pickup and delivery or a loaner to make sure the repair is completed at their earliest convenience.”

Dealers have already received notification of the recall, and customers will be notified by letter. You can check to see if your VIN is involved now on NHTSA’s website.

In the meantime, owners do not need to stop driving their vehicles or park them away from structures –– but watch out for a strong smell of gasoline, a warning sign the injector has cracked. If you smell gas, park your Sport and contact your dealer.

More Details

Though Ford is still investigating the cause of the part failure, the assessment and repair will be to:

  • Update the engine control software to detect whether the fuel injector is cracked and, if so, provide a dashboard message to customers to seek service. Additionally, if a pressure drop in the fuel rail is detected, engine power will automatically be reduced to minimize any risk, while also allowing customers to drive to a safe locations, stop the vehicle, and arrange for service.
  • Install a tube that drains fuel from the cylinder head and away from hot surfaces, and
  • Check for excessive fuel odor near the top of the engine, another indicator of a possible issue.
