If you own a Bronco, well at some point you might be searching for an article that can help you figure out what’s up with your power windows. As owners, we do so many things with our Bronco, from taking it off-road, exposing it to dirt and sandy terrain, even removing the doors completely in warm weather. All those conditions could affect the performance of your power windows and there are ways you can not only troubleshoot the problem but actually reset your windows.
There are a multitude of reasons you may want to reset your windows: they may be rattling too much, going up and down on their own, or they just won’t roll up.
I’m putting together this article because we were having a little trouble with the windows on our 2023 Bronco and this information was shared with us while we were in Baja. I was surprised to find out that there’s not only a process for resetting the windows, but for many other features on your Bronco.
Why Did the Power Windows Stop Working in the First Place?
I have learned that one of the main reasons the automatic feature on your power windows stops working is that at one point, you either changed the battery or disconnected it.
People disconnect the battery for several reasons so having the power windows quit working is a fairly common problem.
If the automatic feature on your windows are no longer working but your power windows still work when you hold the switch, this may just be the reset that you need.
How to Reset a Ford Bronco Window
Here’s how to reset your windows step by step:
- With your Bronco running and all the doors and windows closed, open the affected window by holding down the switch and continuing to hold the button for a count of 5 after the window is fully down. (I’ve seen everything from 2 to 6 seconds recommended.)
- Then, do the opposite by holding the up switch as the window closes and then continue to hold for another 5 seconds.
- Repeat this process, completing both cycles within 30 seconds. Your automatic power window function should start working again. I’m also told this will work if the power is on, regardless of whether the Bronco engine is running.
Common Bronco Window Issues
Window Rattle
Bronco window rattle is definitely an issue that has been reported and is typically noticed when the window is partially down and the vehicle encounters “bumps”. There is an adjustment that can be done by the dealership or some owners have adjusted their own window by using a long screwdriver and a 10mm socket. This involves removing a rubber plug at the bottom of the door and loosening and realigning the screw and then retightening, followed by replacing the rubber plug.
Bounce Back
You may also have been driving off-road, or just enjoying the weather, and try to put your window up only to discover that after it climbs about halfway up, it immediately and rapidly goes back down again.
This feature is a safeguard against injury to prevent catching your fingers or hand in the window, but it can be annoying when you just want to put your window up. When the window senses some resistance, the window goes back down. This may happen for a few reasons besides the intended function:
1. There is a lot of bouncing and window vibration going on that the window senses as physical resistance. Wait until you are on smoother road or come to a stop to see if that simply fixes the problem.
2. You may have grit or dirt on the window or down in the seals. Clean the windows and apply some silicone spray lubricant along the sides. Also add this to your annual maintenance schedule to extend the life of your window motor.
Windows Won’t Work After Replacing Doors
There have been reports of owners taking their doors off to enjoy the weather, only to discover that after putting them back on, the power windows do not function properly or at all.
If this happens, you may have bent the pins or they may be misaligned. Disconnect the power cable in the door and inspect the pins. If all is well, reconnect the cable to see if that fixes the problem. You may also need to remove the door, making sure it’s level as you reinstall it.
Window Popping Out of the Groove
Have you had a window pop out of the upper groove of the window? There have been reports of this happening during high winds or when going down the freeway at higher speeds. Although this is inconvenient, most owners have worked the window back into the groove and were able to continue along their way.
Fuses
If the power windows don’t work at all, check the fuses before heading off to or contacting your Ford dealership.
