Avoid These Two Ways of Destroying Your Bronco’s Soft Top

Nothing earth-shattering here for owners with a couple seasons of Bronco under their belts, but for newer owners, we have a couple of reminders to help you keep your soft top in peak condition.

What to Avoid

There are two common mistakes made somewhat regularly by owners, ones that can get the best of us, so don't hold it against yourself if one happens. Both are caused in part by the weather: windows cracking in the cold and the whole top getting snagged when left open on beautiful days.

Rear Windows

Baby, it’s cold outside and all of that, so be careful lifting the back of your soft top to access the cargo space, to avoid costly damage. The plastic of the windows can become brittle with lower temperatures.

As you can see in the image below, the windows need to remain flexible in the easy-load position to return to a resting state undamaged.

Unfortunately, we’re already seeing the annual “my windows cracked” posts, but hopefully, this article can serve as another warning for those who haven’t experienced it yet.

In the owner’s manual, Ford states:

If the temperature is 32 °F (0 °C) or below or if there is ice build-up on the soft top fabric or windows, do not:

  • Open or close the soft top.
  • Lift the rear window to access the cargo area.
  • Install or remove the rear quarter or rear windows.

Failure to follow these instructions can cause damage to the soft top or windows.

Wait until the weather or top warms before using the easy-load feature of the top, where you can lift and prop it open to put items in the back. Be sure to let family members who use your Bronco know about what can happen, as well, and with attention, you may never have an issue.

Top Open in the First Position

Additionally, while many of us have already been in the thick of “winter,” some of you may still be unlatching and pushing back your top on the regular. This is also a reminder to get in a routine of stopping before you pull into your garage if you like opening your top to the first position.

Even if your garage door is tall enough now for your Bronco to enter without issue, remember to double-check your measurements after suspension modifications or new, larger tires.

Like the rear access in cold weather, one forgetful moment can temporarily cost you some happiness –– and cash.
