I for one am not a fan of this decision.

FULL STORY

Ford and Google have announced an expansive six-year partnership that will see the tech company’s technology spread throughout Ford’s internal operations as well as to future Ford vehicles plus their infotainment systems. The agreement will bear fruit for car shoppers in just a few years, as Ford and Lincoln vehicles of all shapes and sizes are set to run Google’s Android operating system in 2023. It is unclear what this means for the Ford Sync system, but all signs indicate it will be phased out to make way for the new Google-based systems.

Maybe they can leave the car and drop all the rest? Crank windows please and a removable one piece hard top. Thank you

Agreed. Not a fan! Not sure how Google beat out Apple for that contract.

I would think they would need to offer multiple options (Android & Apple). I'm an Apple user but feel the pain of Android users, same will go for me once they convert over.

There will be a point when people never learn how to drive. Ok I mean worse than now! Self driving cars will be all there is.

Google owns YouTube. Maybe they’ll use the infotainment system to inspire drivers to perform reckless stunts.
Chris here. I drive a 2-door Velocity Blue 2023 Ford Bronco Badlands with Sasquatch, Lux, a 2.7L V6, and an automatic transmission. It’s fun.

Because when it comes to Apple tech like this they are very expensive and exclusive. That and apple doesn't play well with others.

They stop teaching how to drive over 30 years ago,now they teach how to get your license, not to drive. They had to change the drivers ed program because to many failed because they couldn't drive a manual transmission.

remember the old joke about learning to drive at Sears? then Sears opened a driving school.o_O

Apple is too proprietary.
Either way this is just another nanny we don't need in a vehicle.

Not a Fan of Google/Android (reason I left them years ago) and this forced data collection that obviously FMC will be happy to share with tech companies to profit.

Well now I'm REALLY going to be pissed if I get bumped to 2023. The infotainment system in my Buick has felt like a beta release that never got all the kinks worked out, since the day I bought it. I was really looking forward to hopping in my Bronco and having it just work the way it's supposed to. I've used Apple CarPlay in other cars and it is just so wonderfully seamless.

Android OS does not mean it would not be able to run apple carplay.... even Ford is not that stupid as to alienate half its customer base... I hope

Personally, I don't mind that Ford is moving to Android, nothing wrong with Android itself. Plus Sync 4 is currently running on QNX, and now that Blackberry is dead that probably means QNX's death certificate has already been drafted. So it makes sense for Ford to abandon ship and move to something more supported.

I am nervous about the partnership with Google. If Google is involved they will no doubt try to find ways to buy & sell user and/or vehicle data. And that is just... gross. For all we know Google may push Ford to drop support for CarPlay, and that will no-doubt cause some customers to abandon ship.

All that said, Ford's online services clearly need help, seems like 50% of the time I try to use my FordPass app or the Ford website something is broken, and we all know Ford's online tracker is less-than-stellar. So from a business perspective as a company that is trying to establish itself as one of the top EV manufacturers with great connected services... it makes sense for Ford to enter in an agreement with Google. They probably aren't going to be able to do it alone.

Hmm. I imagine it will take a while for this to filter in. Sync 4 just came out and it would take a while to change that over.
I have Sync 1 in my car, and Sync 3 is in the spouse's. 3 is infinitely better than 1 and I was really looking forward to 4 in the Bronco. We are a Mac family for all our stuff (I am not interested in having that conversation- we changed over years ago and are now committed on that architecture). I think both Android and Mac OS work with 4. Even if its proprietary, Ford would need to have it work with Mac OS or that is a pushing away a large potential buyer pool. Probably not the whole decision point, but that would be one more thing to consider if one was brand agnostic and cross shopping vehicles.
I will need to see how this is going to work in practice.
