Before I start explaining what my problem is let me just say I use my bronco for trails and I have not been easy on it. I have 23,000 miles, I the 4.6 gears with the automatic trans. and run 37" tires. I have a Ford Performance Pro Cal tune that was put on by the dealership. Just today when rolling to a stop sign my transmission down shifted into first, assumed first since I was all but completely stopped, when it clunked very hard. When I started moving again it started moving very slow as if it was stuck in first gear, then when it shifted it clunked aggressively. It seemed to smooth out as I tried to get it home. Once at home, shut it off in Park as I made my lunch. Came back out to see what it did and when I put it in reverse it did not shift and did not move. In addition to not moving the acceleration would not respond. I shifted to drive and it clunked again then moved forward. I shifted it back to reverse and it clunked into gear and reversed as it should. As I played with this for bit the shifting seemed to be normal aside from having a hard shift between 2 and 3rd gear. When I took it to the dealer to have a tech check it out I could not get the transmission to to the ghost reverse again until I did something you shouldn't do. I kept my foot on the brake after shifting into reverse and tried to accelerate with my foot on the brake. This cause the transmission to not link gearing as well as stop the accelerator from revving the motor even after I released the brake. Once I put the shifter into drive then back to reverse it then found the gear again. My Question: What the flip happened and how is this just an all the sudden issue? Thank you all for your response.

I would be willing to bet it is the hard miles but who knows. My 22 BL Sasquatch has 36K+ miles on it. I tow a trailer with it and have been off road numerous times. At around 30K I noticed a weird shift a couple of times. I took it in and had the oil, transmission, differentials and transfer case fluids changed. There was a noticeable improvement with shifting. Because of how I use it and where I live (Arizona) I do my services at the lower end of the recommended spectrum. It could be fluid breakdown, dirt, grime, transmission damage, issues with wheel size and gearing over taxing the transmission and differentials. It may even be something electronic such as the tune or sensors causing issues. They are gonna need to take a close look at it. My dealership has a technician who specializes in working on the Bronco and also owns one. Good luck and keep us posted.

IMO I think that all of the maintenance intervals are to long. I still follow the old day intervals. I change oil/filter every 3K. I had the trans serviced on my F-150 at 50K, not the 100K Ford recommends. Brakes @ 50-60K. I understand tech and better oils, fluids, etc. Most of the time I hear issues like above folks beat the pa-du-bers out of their equipment and follow the factory intervals and that's fine. I still like the old Fram commercial...You can pay me now, or pay them later. My 2¢.

What ruins Fords transmissions is loving them to death. If the fluid is the correct color and doesn't smell burnt, we never changed it. Mechanics (seen this at the dealer I worked at) they change the fluid and insist on going by the stick reading instead of putting the same amount back in that they drained out.The converter drains out and takes a while to get the air out, so the stick says full while its down 4-5 quarts and the tranny burns up.So people drive off with low fluid level.

Changing the screen is a waste of time, if there are particulates in the screen its too late, the tranny is shot.

Can't say what caused the issue, but the 10 speed has a reputation for not being able to make up its mind under certain conditions. My experience with it is rough shifting for no reason.
I would check the fluid level .
Look at the color.
Was it ever changed?
If the fluid is low look for leaks, sticks and rocks can damage the cooler line and it will leak fluid.Lose enough fluid and it won't shift or engage a gear.
