I took Gurtrude (details in sig) in for 7.5K oil change her 2nd and 5 tire rotation. I have a very nice warranty and synthetic oil changes are included. Guessing... 1K off road mud and sand miles. Prior to her being done I was told by the Customer Service rep that she was at 2 on the rear brakes and that they will soon need to be replaced. I of course asked why so soon and was told that there was so much mud underneath that the extra weight caused the early wear and Ford would most likely not cover it. While I have no idea how much mud was underneath, she is cleaned after every off-roading adventure. I will admit I do not spend a lot of time on her undercarriage, nor have I ever removed her skid plates. She is taken through a carwash 2X weekly and was taken through prior to going to dealership. I asked how much to replace rear brakes and was told $320 but that she could take care of me and talk to her supervisor. She could probably get me a discount and possible employee pricing. I then asked isn't Gurtrude an off-road vehicle and shouldn't she be able to handle the extra weight? 95% of miles I am the only one in her. The only accessories are ICOM radio, picatinny dash rail, go pro and Mountains to Metal rear window molly pannels. I did not share with her that many owners add much heavier additional weight by adding accessories. I understand added weight will cause earlier wear and tear but...? She disappeared and when she came back, she said that they went ahead and ordered rotors and calipers in hopes it would be covered by warranty. As it stands, she is going to call me when parts arrive. I'm an old man not a race car driver. Makes no sense to me.

Something's fishy. For sure, $320 would never buy parts/labor for pads/rotors/calipers.

Might be worth a second opinion...

Years ago a dealership service advisor tried to tell me that I needed a new clutch at ~9K miles on my '97 Mustang GT. Told him to pound sand.

101K miles and 13-14 years later, the clutch actually did need replacing.

Sounds bogus to me. I'd try another dealer as tlowell01 suggests.

I would ask to see the rear brake pads. The added weight of mud would definitely not cause your rear pads to wear out before the front pads. Something definitely does not sound right. Your front pads will always wear out before your rears do.

@SlashRacer just replaced his rear pads but I believe he had a little under 30k miles. I believe they mentioned that he had a lot of mud around the caliper itself. They were going to charge him extra just to clean out the mud. They also wanted to replace the rotors and calipers which didn't need to be replaced.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts/comments. Just got back from dealer and they replaced her rear brakes, drivers side rotor and caliper under warranty! Woot! After looking through other posts it got me to thinkin about how many times I have used trail turn assist which is not much only 4 or 5 times in sand and to only show others what Gurty is capable of nothing crazy. Have great weekends all!
