Cabin noise when driver door opens - Solved.

So I noticed a strange high pitched whine from the cabin that last 2-3 seconds when I open the driver side door. I did a search here and on the Bronco6G forums and I didn’t find any results.

I’m curious what this could be. Only happens once when the vehicle is first opened, and only happens on the driver side. Sounds like a pump is priming or something that is getting engaged right after the door opens.

Is this normal?

EDIT: Solved by @BadlandsA51. It is the low pressure fuel pump priming.

Maybe the speaker? Try recreating it with the radio on and then off and see if it goes away when the radio is off

I had an F150 that did something similar, it turned out to be the door seal expanding/inflating after being compressed when the door was closed.

It is the electric fuel pump priming the high pressure direct injection pump for a quicker start. All Eco Boost engines do it.

This might be it. I tried opening the door with the hood open, and the sound is definitely coming from the engine bay. This is my first Eco boost engine and I wasn’t aware of how they sound. Is the pump getting primed with gasoline, or is it getting primed by compressing air?

It's priming with gasoline from the low pressure fuel pump so that the high pressure pump is completely full of fuel and can generate the 300 to 500 PSI of pressure needed to start the engine. The high pressure pump delivers very little volume, it would take it a long time to self-prime if engine had been off for a while, so the electric pump primes it a first driver interaction with the vehicle, which is opening the door.

This is absolutely a mechanical noise. I think @BadlandsA51 is on the right track.

Thank you for the explanation!

You are welcome. I am fairly new to Bronco Nation, I will try to watch the forums for cases like this where I can be of help. I'm still a ways out on getting our Badlands.
