2021 Ford Bronco Sport Issues

I bought a brand new 2021 Ford Bronco Sport at the end of 2020 and I was so excited for my new vehicle. The car seemed to work well and overall I was happy with my purchase. About a year or so into me buying the car, the vehicle started experiencing issues and from there my experience with Ford took a plunge.

The engine in my Bronco started experiencing a shudder and it sometimes felt like the engine was struggling to keep up. Specifically, I noticed the shudder more while driving at lower speeds (40 mph and below). At times, the rpm spikes to 3,000 rpm’s while breaking before the car comes to a stop, the engine then shudders. Other times, while changing lower speeds, the engine would also jump before it shifts into the next gear. I have taken my car in twice to the dealership and I was also told that this is a characteristic of the vehicle. I have had other Ford’s before that had a similar engine and it did not have that characteristic. Also, if it is a characteristic as they described, then in theory the shuddering should occur every time I break which it doesn’t, it is sporadic and therefore not a characteristic. The guy at the dealership who test drove my car said he could see what I was describing but when it came time for the car to be taken in to the mechanic he said the characteristic was normal for the engine. This absolutely does not feel normal!

Since that visit, I have taken it in for another test drive with the manager and main shop foreman, what a waste of time. I even posted in this forum describing my issue and was given a case number which did absolutely nothing! From there I asked to have my car looked at again for the issue but I told them I needed a loaner. A loaner that is covered by my extended warranty! Well I’ve been on the “loaner list” for several weeks and my car has yet to be looked at and I am supposedly “next” in line. They initially told me it would be 2-3 weeks, but it’s been way past that and 2 weeks since someone reached out to provide an update. I knew they wouldn’t resolve my issue unless I had proof so I was able to record the issue while I drove. I told them this when I took my car in for an oil change, but it went ignored. What they didn’t ignore was how much my car’s resale value is and since then they’ve been hounding me to sell my car to them.

I will not be purchasing another buy Ford again.

Although I feel for you, you may be disappointed by other manufacturers and dealers as well. It's definitely a tough time for manufacturers and dealers to handle service, parts and even manufacturing. We have two Broncos in our fleet and both have been excellent. My one trip to the dealer on my 20K Bronco was to replace the MIC 1.0 top. It was scheduled and resolved (along with a recall and glitchy window). The Bronco Sport has been flawless and continues to impress on comfort, economy and utility. The exceptions, especially negative, get the most attention. Good luck on your new purchase and sorry your Bronco
Sport was a disappointment!

Correction. You didn't buy an actual bronco. You bought a ford escape...I mean a bronco sport. Sorry this happened. Do anything you can to avoid taking your car in for service these days minus maybe an oil change, new tires or new battery and even then schedule in advance if possible. Best of luck.

I'm completely happy with my Bronco, and will continue to be even if there are issues. As to your particular situation, I'm sorry you experienced what you did, but if you would put it in perspective, dealers--as are most businesses, are struggling to recruit, train and retain employees. That is why we are seeing long delays in a service department, they simply don't have enough techs to complete all the work---in most cases. That is likely the reason for the delay in getting you vehicle in. Loaners, like any rental car at the moment, are also in short supply...dealers are required to "set aside" out their inventory vehicles being used as courtesy vehicles...most dealers need those vehicles to sell---they can't afford to hold them out of the sales pool.

In your situation, and I'm sure others will chime in, it almost sounds as if the manual option on the gear shift was press and the vehicle was being driven in that mode...which would cause high revs when slowing down, hard downshifts, shuddering (kind of like taking off in 2nd or 3rd gear with a manual transmission from a stop). In order for a problem to be fixed, the dealer's service tech must be able to replicate the issue...it sounds like in your case, they weren't. Did they pull any trouble codes?

All in all it just sounds like you're not happy with your purchase and you're trying to justify trading it. No need to justify--it's yours to do with as you will. I doubt announcing to a Bronco owners group not to buy a Ford will really sway their decision to do so.

Good luck with the new purchase,

ahh hell, this is a Bronco Sport?? well anyway...everything above still applies...I still think the + and/or - button on the gear shift was pressed and the OP was driving in Manual mode causing the high revs and hard up/downshifts.

No one is allowed to knock the Sport unless you've gone off-roading in it. Then opinions like these can be discussed :p

Amen. I saw a stock Bronco Sport drive trails at Super Celebration that I thought it had no business even attempting. But it made it through just fine.

Lol. Sorry. Im sure its plenty capable especially on tight trails. I was simply letting OP know he didn't have a bronco like his title stated. Much love to the entire sport community.

Post Covid world is not how we are used to living...especially in America where we have instant access to just about anything. I feel for you...but, by the standard you have explained, you will be hard pressed to find any manufacturer doing better. Not saying FORD doesnt have customer service downfalls or supply chain issues....

I have a 2013 Ford Focus been at the dealership since June 1st over a TCM class action lawsuit/recall, not expecting the part until January 2023...and thats just a guess. And I have had 3 of the worthless customer service case number too. Read this sentence again...a 2013 model, that has been in production 10 years...and no parts available! Not like its a new bronco or designed make...focus and fiesta probably millions of these have been made.

And as a tangent note: Dealerships are independent from FORD themselves....it doesnt help when you have a $50k vehicle needing some corrective maintenance, but the dealers can be crappy...and can be awesome, separately from the manufacturer.

Anyway, sorry Ford lost you as a customer. Someday, we may only have Hyundais or Toyotas to wheel....or I hear the porsche Cayenne can conquer Hell's Gate, so it's gotta be good too.

I decided to take matters into my own hands and sold my car to a different dealership and purchased another vehicle. I will NEVER buy another Ford again and will be sure to tell my contacts to steer clear from this company.Their extended warranty is useless, they have terrible service and they literally do nothing when you report an issue.

Engine issues aside the inside of the car is cheap. It’s made of cheap, thick plastic that rattles every time you drive - it sounds like I’m driving an old clunker. The materials are so mediocre that they scratch with the most minor touches - very unimpressed. All this to say that if you’re considering a new Bronco, I would highly recommend you look into other options. See how their service department near you is rated - that will tell you all you need to know about how Ford handles issues and trust me, there will be a lot.

1 thing, if you bought a port, it isn't a real bronco. The Broncos are amazing.
2nd thing, all of the eco boost are twin turbos and there is a known and typical issue with turbo engines generally known as the shutter. The issue is moisture in the engine for the forced induction. You need an oil catch can and you basically catch dirty oil. You can empty it every 500 to 1000 miles and it keeps the engine safe and clean.

Drain the intercooler, get an oil change, add a catch can, you will be perfect.

I would have tried a different dealer if they could not find the problem and fixed it.
PSA to all - you do not have to take the vehicle back to where you bought it for service you can use any Ford dealership you like for service. I have a Chevy dealership that has great service but every time we have bought a car (Except my Equinox) we have bought from another dealer because they had what we were looking for. but we always go back for service at the better dealership.

I am sure this was a typo, but only the V-6 Ecoboost are twin turbos the 4-cyl are a twin scroll turbo but it is a single turbo.

you right, you right. I havent researched the v4s, but wouldn't be surprised if they have the same issues. It is a ford issue with all of the vehicles with the shutter.

Two points here:

1.) The semantics of Bronco vs Bronco Sport is kind of irrelevant here, since the whole point is poor service by the dealer. They both go to the same dealer for repair.

2.) It's a supply chain thing. Yes it's frustrating. No, you're not likely to get much better service from anywhere else, because the supply chain supplies all different manufacturers.

Great point..I bought my Bronco from a multisite/multi brand dealer, at one of their small town locations, I plan on getting it serviced at their Lincoln dealership because, A.--their customer service is outstanding and are less busy than the Ford service departments, B. They're closer to me, and C. They have free snacks.

Any Ford/Lincoln dealer is the place to be. Good coffee, cush chairs snack, the whole nine yards. If they don't have all that Matthew McConaughey will show up and wreck the place :)
