October 10, 2024, Mammoth Lakes, CA
The Rebelle Rally, America’s longest competitive off-road rally, and the nation’s first women’s navigation rally, returned yesterday for its 9th edition in Mammoth Lakes, California. Once again, the rally has sold out, with 65 teams ready to navigate some of the most challenging terrain in the American West.
Event Overview
The rally began with Pre-Technical Inspection at The Village Plaza in the heart of Mammoth Lakes on Wednesday, October 9th. Open to the public, Pre-Tech Inspection was an opportunity for sponsors, friends, local residents, and family to meet the competitors up close, check out the vehicles, and learn more about the Rebelle Rally.
The official Technical Inspection took place today, where each team had to clear a series of detailed checks to ensure they are ready to participate in the competition. Every vehicle underwent rigorous inspections to verify compliance with safety and competition standards. This included verification of navigation systems being disabled, vehicle safety equipment checks, and adherence to rally-specific regulations. Additionally, competitors had event decals applied and received their maps, roadbooks, and tracking gear that will carry them through eight days of competition.
Technical Inspection is a crucial step for participants, setting the tone for what lies ahead—a test of the resilience of both the competitors and their vehicles as they prepare to tackle over 2,600 kilometers of off-road terrain in what will be the longest course in the rally’s history. Teams will be using only maps, compasses, and roadbooks—no GPS or electronic devices allowed—to navigate through California and Nevada.
Competitor Lineup
This year’s rally features 130 women from the U.S., Canada, Costa Rica, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and Austria, with competitors ranging in age from 23 to 78. Among them, 62 are rookies, with 26 teams vying for the Rookie of the Year honors. 68 competitors are returning, including four who have competed in every rally edition since its inception.
Vehicle Entries and Contingency Programs
The 9th edition of the Rebelle Rally brings an impressive lineup of manufacturer-sponsored entries, with 21 vehicles from major manufacturers across the 4x4 and X-Cross® classes. In the 4x4 class, 15 entries represent major manufacturers, including Toyota, Ford, Land Rover, Jeep, and Ram. The X-Cross® class features entries from Kia, Honda, Ford, BMW, and first-time manufacturer entries from Subaru and Toyota. Teams from Rebelle Rally partners include TOTAL CHAOS Fabrication, FOX Trail Trust, and Iridium. Magna International joins with two corporate teams, and an INEOS Grenadier makes its debut in the Rebelle Rally, fielded by Warner INEOS Grenadier. A second Grenadier is also on the roster, entered by a privateer team. Jeep and Toyota are tied for the largest manufacturer representation this year, each with 17 vehicles—including both corporate entries and privateers—followed by Ford with 15 entries. Land Rover has five, while Subaru, Nissan, and Lexus are represented by two, one, and one vehicle, respectively.
Exciting contingency programs are also part of this year’s rally. The Pirelli Scorpion® Tire Challenge sees its largest field yet, with 15 teams competing on Pirelli tires for a monetary prize that can be directed to the charity of their choice. Scrubblade is also back, providing teams equipped with their wiper blades the chance to win cash prizes for their chosen charities and sponsoring the coveted Team Spirit Award.
Green Basecamps Powered by Renewable Innovations
Sustainability remains a core priority of the Rebelle Rally. This year, Renewable Innovations returns to power the rally’s remote basecamp exclusively with advanced solar energy systems, reflecting the rally’s commitment to sustainable, off-grid energy solutions.
The Route and Challenges Ahead
Known for its breathtaking and challenging routes across California and Nevada, the rally’s course remains a secret until the competition begins. This year’s route includes three distinct basecamps and two Marathon Legs, where competitors camp out in remote locations without access to basecamp amenities or penalty-free mechanical support. The rally concludes in Southern California, where the final two Marathon days will play a pivotal role in determining the overall standings.
