That's a terrible idea, when do we start?

This is an object lesson on safety and not becoming complacent. Also on not buying inexpensive recovery gear.

Safety. Buying expensive name brand gear isn't a guarantee either if you misuse it. Common sense goes a long way.

He said the failed shackle came from Amazon. Said it had a much looser weave and wasn’t coated, like his more expensive shackles.

I checked some $26 ‘Grip’ soft shackles at Big R, a local ranchers supply today. They weren’t coated and had big, loose weave too.

Think we’ll stick with our shackles from Bubba Rope..

Yeah, it's not just "Amazon" shackles that are a problem. It's a cheaply made ones no matter where they come from. In the end, I think, to a great extent, you get what you pay for. Take a look at Factor 55 for example. They not only make and test a quality product. They label them with the information as well as lot numbers.

Yeah, I read a post on another forum they were out on the trail on the weekend and the soft shackle broke. The only information he had on the shackle was that it was a Christmas gift. He also remembered the Jeep had an after market bumper and it seems it has some sharp edges in the clevis. So some sharp edges and a perhaps a cheap gift shackle.

I ended up with all Bubba Ropes stuff. I was looking real close at Factor 55. Any of the good quality made and tested in the U.S. and I think we are on the right track. I also ordered from Bubba Ropes some chafe protectors and spoke with them a couple of times. Their chafe protectors are bullistic nylon and seem substantial. We shall see in a couple of days when they arrive. I figure with the chafe protectors and their soft shackles I should be fine. Or of course, something in similar quality. I also went with a couple of bridles one for each vehicle if needed. It has been a good discussion taking everyone's comments and coming up with a solution a whole lot better than what I currently have. Definitely costly but worth it.

Yeah, Bubba folks are very helpful & gear's bomb proof. We like Garmin's inReach Messenger sat comm. For a little more coin, it's the latest trick with new receiver chip, much longer battery, big screen, etc..
