Organizing my packing list for camping in Maine during black fly season.
  • Big floppy hat – check
  • Bug net – check
  • Favorite Bronco tee shirt – check.
Something to consider if Off-Roadeo is based in Maine and you have the good fortune to arrive during black fly season. Oh Boy!

@BuzzyBud i was thinking of that last night when I saw the possibility of the Off Roadeo being in Maine!

I might need to borrow your hat since we don't have the black flies... But the 17 year locust is coming here soon!

Although black fly season can be entertaining, I would expect Off-Roadeo in Maine will be located closer to the population centers. However, for the hearty souls who seek pre and post camping adventures in the great north woods of Maine, come prepared or get eaten alive. ;)

I'm thinking about heading somewhere after Off Roadeo. Maybe Baxter... We'll see once I get time to plan, and how the timing coincides with black flies!

Thanks for the reminder @BuzzyBud - black fly season is no joke!!

We used to go up to Maine for white water rafting trips and the best days are dam release days so you would experience maximum rapids. But, we need to schedule judiciously because any fun on the water is immediately negated by the painful bite of those damn flies!

Can't forget the bugs in the bush as well. People on the west side don't know much about ticks.

Yup gotta have the bug net, none of the bug repellents really work against black flies. But I still spray my clothes, not skin and all around the campsite.

In Northern Minnesota the mosquitoes are really bad and the hat with netting would be a good idea. Most of the time here in South Dakota you get what we call no-see-ems and of course mosquitoes. When camping as long as you have some repellent and spray your tent and area around it then it's not bad at all
