I installed a catch can/oil separator as well (
this one)... as the 2.7L is both port and direct injected, from reading and watching videos my understanding is that it can't hurt, but it CAN help. Might only have to be emptied once a year or something, if that, but if it helps then why not. Plenty of F150's with this same engine seem to indicate it will likely catch
something.
Update:
At 5000 miles, I unscrewed the catch can and found what amounts to probably 1-2 tablespoons of oil. To me this is quite a bit, which was prevented from blowing back into my engine. Extrapolate this over 50k miles, and that would be maybe 1-2 cups of oil. Not a ton, but quite a bit considering it's oil going where it shouldn't.
I'd say at this point that it was worth it... wonder if the bronco-specific one would be catching more than the F150 one. I know they're generally the same, but hoses are shorter. Also wonder if a fancier brand with filters, etc., would be catching more.
