Will a winch block the air into the turbo?

I am no mechanic. Looking for an intelligent answer as to why or why not where the winch is placed on every bumper I’ve seen will block air to the turbo intake? What type of damage will this do in the short/long run if so. Does anyone have a winch on a newer model Bronco and does it effect anything in a negative manor? To me it appears where the turbo intake is located is exactly where a winch would be located. I may be wrong, please correct me if so. I have seen that they are working on a turbo air intake relocation kit. Seems like it will be a good amount of work, which means plenty of labor or money. At that point I’m not sure a winch will be worth it. Any help in understanding this subject would be appreciate. Thank you in advance for your time and sharing your knowledge.

All of the winch-capable bumpers released so far take that into account so it's not an issue

all of the winches you see , including the ford one , do not block the intercooler of the 2.7. (but DO end up blocking the camera)

however , if you look at some of the more "stealthy" bumpers that hide the winch lower , it only works on the 2.3 engine because mounting it this low WOULD block the intercooler.

Here is an example of the type of winch you wont be able to get with the 2.7 engine because of the intercooler. The 2.3l guys lucked out

I saw one of these at a dealership. The cut out allows air for the intercooler and ACC.

Obviously the biggest impact area that you should avoid is the red square... which is the air intake for the intercooler.

I'm a car nerd, and a tuner. Maybe I can help a bit. I'm no professional mechanic, so please take what I have to say with a grain of salt, I only turn wrenches in my garage.

A winch sitting in front of the intercooler isn't a huge deal. The intercooler is part of the system to help cool and regulate temperatures for your turbo, and air intake. The intake itself, though, is still under the hood and not obstructed by a winch. There's no concern of blocking airflow or causing problems unless you have some huge form of recovery gear that completely prevents airflow from getting to the intercooler.

As others have said, though, there are no hidden winch options (which I would prefer, and am waiting for) for the 2.7L. This is due to the placement of the trans cooler/oil coolers, from what I understand, not so much the intercooler (though this could be part of it, if the intercooler sits a bit below the impact bar behind the bumper). Hope that helps.

That’s actually the diagram that got me concerned. Thanks to all for the input so far. You've put my mind at ease. Now back to looking for a new front bumper that’s winch compatible and works with Lux. Any suggestions on bumper or winches are appreciated.

@RagnarKon - doesn’t it seem like of the AM offerings at least partially block intercooler? I’m not too worried low speed 4x4 driving, but cruising uphill in the summer with 15# of boost I’m wondering if performance will suffer.

Gee an NA engine wouldn't have this issue. hint hint wink wink Ford.

The only modification I'm doing for off roading besides, tires, is the winch.

A NA engine would also not produce efficient power with low fuel consumption.

Neither do turbo gas or turbo diesel engines lol. There's millions of turbo vehicles out there with their entire grill blocked off for the entire winter with a grill blanket. Cars to semis.

this is definitely not the case I have seen many that block most if not all air flow to intercooler I like this bumper it looks like it would alow good airflow

Wench won't block your turbo unless she gets stuck in your grill.

I drive a V8 sports coupe that makes 414whp. It gets 11mpg. I had a turbo 4 cylinder that made 440 or so whp. It got 22mpg, and had waaay more torque.

the v8 jeep gets equal or better milage than the badlands 2.7

and it does it without being in boost

this idea that v8s are "outdated" is gaslighting from companies that have to beg forgiveness every year to the EPA

I love a good old v8 I have a 7.3 godzilla and it's incredible How ever I'll take the torque curve of a turbo engine any day over a na v8

That is a sweet set-up right there. I wonder if RC will make it compatible with the capable bumper.
