Wheel ratings question

For those considering swapping out the wheels, what weight rating will we need to consider? The Bronco sits pretty heavy, and the once you add a few camping items you’re at GVWR, and then trying to navigate off-road to get to that camping spot. Worst case scenario is you might get up on only a couple wheels, so I’d say you need wheels rated to max weight divided by two? This would require a wheel rating around 3000lbs. There don’t seem to be a lot of after market options that are 2500 lbs and above. Thoughts?

There are some options, but I wouldnt worry about getting on two wheels. The GVWR is 6,100 lbs or so, so I'd be fine with 2,500 at each corner. That's over 50% higher than GVWR and a great margin for error.

Also, are the 315/70R17 tires able to be used on wider rims? The squatch package comes with 8.5” rim, but the after market seems to have more 9” available. Is it as simple as swapping wheels with the factory tires, or do the tires need to be replaced with a wider wheel?

Tire rating is more important. But even with the tires you probably don't need E rated unless you plan on off-roading or towing at max capacity. Better fuel economy and comfort if you don't go E rated. If you go sasquatch or upgrade to a 35" tire it will be E rated regardless.

As far as rim width. 8.5" is right in the sweet spot. The 35" tire (315/70 17 ) on the sasquatch takes an approved rim width of 8" - 11". Keep in mind the wider the rim the less protection the tire will give the rim. The tire will "balloon" out more with a skinnier rim and give more protection from curb rash or rocks. A wider rim with the same tire will have less to no protection if the rim is at the wide end of the spectrum.

Last you need to know your offset/backspace. Apparently you might not be able to simply put on a larger tire if you went with the smaller tire option at purchase. The offset/backspace difference may cause rubbing on the wheel wells or control arms if you switch to a larger tire. Another post said that the sasquatch package wheels have different offset/backspace than the other Bronc packages. I cannot confirm this because I have not seen the specs for the different wheels. If you plan to upgrade to 35" tires and not go with the sasquatch you need to know those specs otherwise you might have to buy wheels and tires. The sasquatch package is a killer deal if you like the looks of the wheels. The gearing of the sasquatch is what you will want if you have 35" tires. It will cost $3k+ to regear after the fact. Not regearing when you go up in tire size is the biggest rookie mistake you can make unless you don't care about fuel economy or performance. There is a reason Ford is using 4.70 gears with the sasquatch package.

Thanks for the intel. I have the Sasquatch package and planning on sticking with the 35” tires, but will likely want to swap the wheels. Do you have a source for the rim width window you provided? I’ve been looking all over for a table or something that shows this exact type of info.

Go to BFGoodrichtires.com and look at the tire specs, or Tirerack.com. Any tire specs will show the suggested rim widths.

Ok, thanks. I was trying to find a table that had tire size charted by approved wheel widths. Searching for a couple specific tire sizes on those websites seems to dial it in enough though. I suppose the next question is offset. I saw a picture on the other forum showing a Sasquatch wheel stamp at +30 offset. I’m curious what aftermarket offset range one could get away with on the Sasquatch package.

Only need to replace wheels. 9" wide wheels will be fine with 315 tires.

Check over at Bronco6G as I haven't seen those pictures here or would link it. They posted actual pictures of the wheel inside rim with the offsets. +55 for Non SAS and +30 for SAS.
