^that’s a good one because you can download them for offline use. GAIA is good too as is TrailsOffroad

I second these suggestions; I don't have ONX but have heard good reviews. I haven't tried it yet though since the other options fit my needs.

I’m still debating onX and Gaia. Seen a lot of good reviews for both. It may come down to which one is easier to use on device versus the dash interface. With all the CarPlay hiccups, I plan to just use Bluetooth for my device, so will likely need to use the device for trail nav.

They do have a free trial that you could use to compare the different apps, but I also have a “if it is not broken, don’t fix it” policy.

I’ve used GAIA with car-play and seems to work okay. I am still experimenting with all the different layers available, almost too much info!

One thing I’ve noticed is the CarPlay integration is not full featured (you can’t start/stop recording from the 12” screen). But I sure like having that big map instead of my iPhone!

To be perfectly honest... I use paper Forest Service, National Park, and BLM maps.

But I should probably upgrade to modern times. And now that I lived in New England I'm going to have to find something new anyway—not a whole lot of public land out here.

I did briefly try onX, but wasn't impressed at all. Gaia is also on my list of apps to try, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Ford also said they would release an app with trail maps... but it may ultimately end up being vaporware—was originally supposed to be released in Fall 2021 and it's been near-complete radio silence since then.

Vaporware, I have not heard that term lately. I still like to refer to it as va-poo-ware.

I use Gaia, and have for several years. It works great on an Ipad. Mostly use the Topo map.

onX just added Carplay support I believe which will add a good bit of functionality (I have not tried it yet). Isn't there one that Ford was developing?

Yes, Ford's app has seen many delays (sound familiar). Originally it was intended to come out in the Fall of 2021, then the end of 2021, and now they are just saying "sometime in 2022". In other words "This wasn't as easy as we thought", so who know when it will get finished." I've used OnX, and it has met my needs (better than paper maps, that's for sure). I haven't had a chance to use the new CarPlay feature with it yet, but as someone said about, seeing the map on the 12" screen will beat the heck out of my iPhone screen.

Another one to try is BaseMap. It’s like OnX, but cheaper. I use it for hunting.

I use Garmin GPS. Also have hardcopy of N.F. MVUM maps, and other local maps when they are available. In the MI, WI, MN states I have a copy of VVmapping software for the Garmin. It has all of the ORV trails and routes for state land. Nice to have when I ride my ATV. It also shows the roads in each county that are ATV accessible.

If you have an iPhone or iPad, there is an app called Topo Maps by Mappendix (the icon is mostly red) that gives you access to every single USGS quadrangle map and the Canadian equivalents. I have pre-downloaded all of the maps for the places I go or want to go. I like it because the publisher does not spam you with email nor does he request and information. It's the one app I use most.
