Tow Wiring Harness

Maybe this has been asked before …. But with all the wiring on the Broncos, especially when you order models with the aux switches, why doesn’t Ford just wire the things for a tow package and the dealer can put the “hardware” on later? How much more would it cost to add to the wiring harness wiring for lights and trailer brake?? Maybe I’m missing something.

Why is it even an option at all and not a standard built in thing? The receiver could just be welded as part of the frame assembly and always assumed to be there. That was always a head scratcher to me too. Like someone is gonna snub a Bronco because it has a tow hitch. No way!

I dropped the Tow Package to successfully get my Bronco earlier.

I agree that it’s annoying but, Curt has a plug & play wire harness and the receiver is only 4 bolts - the only downside is no 7 pin connection

I just had the brake controller installed and was shockingly surprised. I was expecting a contraption on my dash that would be ugly and in the way of my knee. Seriously, I was preparing myself to accept whatever the dealer did knowing it was necessary for towing my camper.

When I picked up my Bronco, I had to ask where it was. Ta dah! Looks great. (Hint... it's the little knob on the right.)20220423_131009.jpg

Sure beats some ugly box hanging off the dash.

When I asked, it's installed on the console because that's where so much of the electronics are located.

From what I understand, it's the wiring part of the tow package that is constrained, not the receiver.

Yes the wiring is issue. Ford was too cheap to use better harness. They wanted upsell $$$$. Well if you bought the $195 aux option, Ford did do some wires to rar passenger side. See other posts. Levittown Ford is working on issue for Base Broncos. Most dealer dont have clue, since no error code! Etrailer is helpful ,but if aux. switch option Fotd did most to work. Use Point E , but test amps and voltage off switch #2 or 3-6 need 6Amps for Ford $125.00 Old F150 or 7 amps for plug in play. Base has halogen not led!

Same here , aftermarket hitch installed now but no wiring.

Here is where Ford told me to go on using Aux Sw. to wire Ford Tow Lighting $125 wires:
Hi Jeff(Levittown Service mgr)

Attached is Ford instructions for Bronco Trailer Light (4 wire only) If electric brakes ( blue wire) almost same .
I am proposing the following modification that use the Pre Wired 1.5mm E white/ yellow wire that lays behind the passenger cargo side panel, near or on top of RR wheel well.( Glove box to cargo Wire E)

Instead of re running 12 ga AWG inside left side of SUV, connect to white/ yellow ( Point E on diagram attached). The 6 Amp rated black box can fit in that area. Ground white wire there also.

Then disassemble the two tail light access panels ( per instructions) however:

No need to remove battery terminal wires, reset computers, etc. It will be on switch not under power, until flipped up. Remove passenger cargo side wall , per instruction for driver side wall ( revered from instructions)

Then connect Red power to white/ yellow. ( Order of connecting left up to tech)
Then Green wire is T connect as instructed( right halogen), but red/ yellow wires may have to be extended if not enough wire reach, to driver side and T connected red/ yellow, as instructed.

The remaining four wire will be run from passenger cargo , under bumper, to the 4/7 receipitical already installed on bumper. Just have tech double check correct Y, W, B, G pin locations, before connecting. Heat shrink would be nice! T connector , but Ford does not come with plug/ play connectors, since it came from F 150 part bin! Test for proper voltage, as progress 6-7Amp@12v ( no "dash" error codes)

Test lights working properly, and close up tail light access covers and passenger cargo side panel.

If all goes well, the voltage and 6-7 amps at point E in diagram, once the switch wires are respectively connected in firewall, and behind glove box to point E in diagram.

I believe that will save a lot of shop time, since at point E of Auxillary switches has 1.5mm and should be good for 17 amp(16 AWG) acpcitity. That would be a voltage drop of say 50% ( 17/6-7).

One other advantage; the Aux. Switch can dis-connect power when not needed. Only question for FORD is if Wire E is 1.5mm copper and will it void warrantee. The power wire E is there why not use it, and not re- create the wheel!

Sounds simple, but I am no tech. Best to forward email to right factory field engineer, before installation quote.

Short version
Owners manual pg 454 or so say 1.5 mm or 16 gauge wire. If 10 Amp fused then 6 amp trailer lights modular draw should be ok Just want to make sure before I bring in. Ford part should work in right side cargo. Just add red and yellow to left tailight assembly . T connectors should work.( 3) . Four wire trailer light wired to 4/7 pin reciptical. Job done test amps at point E on purple Owners manual before wiring.(below)

Have read too many nightmares about backing into rocks and bending the frame to want a tow hitch

The hitch sits under the spare. It was not Ford crap. This post is on wiring $125.00 not metal parts. Looks better than factory. Pack up hit spare, unless you fail to use cameras, very good images. Do you own one Sully?
