Hello!
I was reading through an old thread about 5 tire rotation, which I'm definitely going to be doing myself. My concern is this:

I bought my truck used with about 11k miles on it, so I'm not sure of the tire rotation history. I took some measurements and got the following:
  • Front: 10-10.5mm
  • Rear: 11mm
  • Spare: 12mm

I thought on a RWD vehicle the rears would wear more? Or am I mistaken and front wears more regardless due to steering friction? I was going to follow the pattern shown here (credit to @dover157 from the other thread)

but I'm concerned that they may have already done a 4 tire rotation at the dealership. Can anybody clarify what I should be expecting if there was never a rotation done?

Thanks y'all

Are the tires stock? If so then you might consider replacing them anyway at that mileage. Stock tires are historically made of lower quality materials than replacement tires, so they're probably pretty well worn by now anyway. The Territory MT's are comparable to other good AT tires on the market. K02's, Wildpeaks, Grapplers, etc. There are many tires that are quieter and better for whatever type of terrain you drive in.

Thanks but I'd rather get as much out of these as I can at the moment; 10-12mm still seems like plenty of life left.

I would check with the service person at your dealership about the service history. They will know if the tires were rotated.

Totally understandable. When you do swap them out, you’ll be amazed at the difference in loudness / howling and comfort.

Yeah that's a good call. I just like to avoid the dealer if I can :)
I guess I was wondering if there's a way to tell based on the wear levels what the best move would be. I would definitely like to get that spare into the rotation.

It could have been an alignment issue or some other problem, so best to have the dealer, or at least a tire shop, to look at it.

A lot of people don’t rotate the spare because beadlock trim takes forever to do.

It’s not a true bead lock, all they need to do is rotate the spare in and one out. No worries about the trim ring

My shop takes off the trim rings by hand to avoid scratching the rings or damaging the screws. It takes a while.

Got it, was strictly thinking about the tire rotation not balancing. With 11k miles I would think it is normal wear

Gosh it's hot

Rears will wear faster.
Normally tread depth is in 32s. If that's what you meant then I wouldn't worry about the 5 tire rotation. The tires originally were 16/32". So obviously that spare has been on the ground. Go ahead and move the most worn tire to the spare.

Awesome this is what I was thinking. Thank you!

I can't imagine you'd need to replace them at 11k miles. I've got almost 7k on my (almost 4 month old) Bronco and the tires still look brand new
