The Life of Riley

I wanted to let folks know what happened to our Golden Riley. On Friday 01/05/24 she would not get up from her bed to eat or go outside. I had to carry her out and when I set her down she collapsed. I then picked her up and brought her back in and laid her on her bed. She tried to lift her head and then fell back. She had been acting a bit tired for the at times, but it was always after we had been out hiking or working in the woods, etc. When I picked her up to take her to the vet, she was 100% limp, no ability to help me. Once we got to the vet they informed me that she had Hemangiosarcoma. It is a K9 only cancer, in Riley it started in the spline. The cancer tends to grow and spread rapidly, rarely giving the owner any clue their dog is harboring a deadly disease – until it suddenly strikes. This is what happened to Riley. She walked up the stairs Thursday night as if nothing was wrong. On January 2, 2024 we were running trails in the Bronco and hiked 4 miles on the North Country Trail. So on Friday, January 5, 2024 I had to have her put to sleep. She was 11 years old. She went everywhere with us.

Here are the dogs it affects the most, (German shepherds, golden retrievers, Portuguese water dogs and Labrador retrievers). Riley was a Golden Retriever.

The picture of Riley was from 12/31/23. May God keep her and bless her.

I'm sorry if my writing is not up to par.

It's funny you posted this. My wife took this picture of Riley waiting in November 23 while I was at my volunteer job.

I'm really sorry you lost your dog. It's not an easy thing to deal with when dogs have become part of our families.

So sorry to hear about your loss and thanks for sharing here with your Bronco “family”. The passing of a loved one is always difficult but especially so when the love is from a pet which is always unconditional. They say time heals all wounds but I still think of my 15 YO Portuguese Water Dog who passed last March practically every day. All the best to you and your family during this difficult time - I am sure he truly had The Life of Riley!

So so sorry for your loss. I have a 3 year old golden retriever named Chief who is my best friend. I will be squeezing him a little tighter today and definitely take him on an extra adventure this week. I hope you find peace in knowing Riley is no longer in pain and she will always be with you even if you can't see her.

Your writing is perfect and from the heart. I’m truly sorry for your loss. Pets are family and their absence is keenly felt. From the sounds of it, you gave Riley a wonderful life and a good home. She was a lucky dog indeed. Thank you for sharing your story with us, @MIGeezer. We share your pain.
