Of course a line under than much tension is not just going to fall the ground when it breaks, synthetic or not.. They did not have any weight in the damper and that also would have made a difference if they did. A synthetic line is still going to be 100x safer than a steel line if a failure occurs..

The point is, people have been lead to believe synthetic rope falls straight down. And they get inside that recoil zone. And thats simply not the truth 100%.of the time. Always stand clear and always have bystanders to stand back. And the question is how many dampers do you use? Two, four, ??? Cause when it breaks there is two pieces of the line recoiling.... and it could be dead center of the rope. Or it could be 3 feet outside the winch or hook..... safety first!!

The thing is maintenance. If you maintain your cable its not going to break.Rusted frayed cables should be replaced, most people that experience a failure have damaged cables. If a proper safety factor is observed with cable ratings the winch won't pull hard enough to break it.

That's not true about falling straight down, being taught. Physics taught you that. If you don't understand that then you shouldn't use a winch. This is a good video.

Absolutely.. People have been killed or seriously injured by winch lines breaking. In most of those cases it was user error and / or being unsafe.. There is A LOT of tension under that line when it's under load..

This is why I always comment and tell others to avoid using high lift jacks or come alongs for winching. In order to use them you have to be inline with the system and a few inches from the cable... They are widow makers, especially the steel line or chain ones...

And the question is how many dampers do you use? Two, four, ??? Cause when it breaks there is two pieces of the line recoiling

One damper for a synthetic line should be enough if you add weight to it. Maybe 2 for a steel line. Even with a weighted damper, a synthetic line still won't instantly fall to the ground if it's under enough tension..

No doubt there are a lot of people winching who do not do it safely or really know what they are doing but they are future Darwin award winners..

Safety First is always 1st.

One of the contributing factors to which “accidents” occur when auto manufacturers like Jeep & Ford include winches as standard equipment in some models - putting owners in potentially dangerous situations when used incorrectly. Proper training is paramount to safe usage.

Good luck with that. You can't get people to use a turn signal.

Everything about the vehicle is dangerous if not properly trained. The fact that Ford lets a 6,000 pound vehicle go faster than 60 is just crazy...

Really? coz Mercedes and BMW don't seem to have them or mirrors that work.

My 1988 Suzuki came with the ultimate turn signal indicator. The continuous buzzer is so loud and obnoxious that using the turn signal scares passersby.

Bronco information: the modern Bronco turn signal is sedate.

Of course a line under than much tension is not just going to fall the ground when it breaks, synthetic or not.. They did not have any weight in the damper and that also would have made a difference if they did. A synthetic line is still going to be 100x safer than a steel line if a failure occurs..

Also, you will notice that the line ended up UNDER the Jeeps at both ends. I guarantee you that a steel cable if it broke like that would probably have busted the windshield or at least slammed into the grill/radator, and could have gone to the side (see triangle of death) on at least one of those Jeeps. Back in the old days, we used to put the hood up on the Jeep, just to keep it from coming through the windshield.

The Synthetic line, as he says in the video, just follows the tension straight back and it stayed low right back toward the winch/bumper.

Also, while getting hit by a synthetic winch line will HURT, you have a pretty good chance of surviving. A steel cable ... well, your odds aren't nearly as good of walking away as with synthetic.

So I agree 100%, Synthetic is much safer than steel. But putting some weight in that bag and getting it to fit a bit tighter still can't hurt. In the end, safety first, stay out of the way when you are winching.
