Swing away hitch cargo carrier

Looking for some input or options on this topic. I have a hitch mounted cargo carrier I use for road trips (necessary for two dogs and a one month old). Only issue is it is a pain in the ass to get to the back of the bronco since the tailgate can’t open more than about 6 inches before hitting the carrier. Does anyone know of a good option for a cargo carrier that swings away from the vehicle to allow access to the rear? I’ve seen the Yakima Exo, but it’s over $1000 and that seems excessive. I’m also good with an option of piecing stuff together if there are separate parts to use. Thanks all!

A brand that's been around a long time is Wilco. It's not cheap, and not exactly what you're looking for, but it will create a swinging cargo carrier when used with their hitch swing. The swing out will hold your spare tire and has a receiver that you can use the cargo carrier with:

The hitchswing, see how the bikes swing out here:

That would probably work and you can leave spare tire on tailgate especially if you use the Yakima extension you can get.

Kuat Pivot $398 @ REI, $327 @ AMAZON

Was a cyber Monday deal guess they ran out early. Either way there is no $20 savings at REI. Guess it was a snooze/lose situation, wish ida ordered it lol

Thanks for the great suggestions. My only concern with the Kuat one is the weight limit. Looks like 250, which after putting on the carrier itself will not leave a ton of weight. I like the first one, just a bit pricey. Probably worth the investment tho, so I’ll have to watch it for a sale. Anyone have personal experience with the Wilco?

Edit:
Now that I’m reading the specs, seems like Wilco is only rated for 250 max also. Guess Kuat may be the better choice.

I’ll probably go with the Yakama swing away.
It comes with the 2’ wide basket whitch I’ll use on the rooftop anyways.
My ski rack is a half rack , so there’s room for the basket on the other half.
I figure “you get what you pay for” and I don’t need issues hundreds of miles from home.
I think the price is excessive but I guess it is what it is.

Have you considered switching to an aluminum cargo carrier? Not sure what you're using but if it's eating at the 250 that much may be something to consider.

I’ve thought about that also. I have the Curt folding one. Had it for a while. Doesn’t even fold since the spare tire blocks it now. It’s all powder coated steal so pretty heavy, but it has a 500 lb weight limit…which is more than the tongue weight is rated for

This gives you a visual… https://www.bronco6g.com/forum/threads/bike-rack-on-new-mic-obx-bronco.26425/page-3#post-1096122

Do a search and there a couple sites with it discounted… a seller on Amazon has Driver and Passenger side available with free shipping… from what I’ve observed, I’ll prefer Passenger side…

Ended up finding this on EBay and decided to give it a shot. Seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. Showed up today and seems pretty sturdy. Welds aren’t very clean, but oh well. They also claim to be the direct manufacturer, however it had a made in China sticker on it, lol. Once I assemble it and get a chance to use it, I’ll post a follow up review.

Here are my initial thoughts on this cargo carrier as I finish putting it together. It’s definitely not light. I’d venture a guess that it’s easily 50 or more pounds, so may be a bit of an ass pain to install on the hitch, but no worse than the curt folding one I used to have. Seems pretty hefty, but given the less than superb welds, I guess time will be the true test of its longevity. The website claims it supports 600lbs, so I will never even get close to that. Pretty easy to assemble and it came well packaged and protected, which was nice to see for a change. Not going on a trip anytime soon, so I will probably throw it on this week just to check fitment and drive around with it to make sure it doesn’t fall off. It also came with a hitch stabilizer, which the product description didn’t mention, so that was a nice surprise. Here are some photos of it.
