Just wondering if anyone has direct experience with any of these SUV - attachable style tents? Light use planned, probably just a handful of trips per year, no RTT is in my future at this point. I like the idea of these tents to be able to leave the cooler and some other gear in the back of the Bronco, use the tailgate table in the tent, etc. similar to the Napier brand that Ford offered a couple years ago, but several Amz options that are in the $200 and under range. Like this one:

I have always preferred to have the tent separate from the Bronco because I use tailgate as a cooking station. Whenever we go somewhere camping I take the cooler since you need to stay hydrated. Having to attach and detach the tent all the time would bother me.

Hey Fillups,
I enjoy this style of tent. After looking at many reviews on this style of tent, I went with the Napier tent offered through Ford Accessories, or directly from Napier Tents.
I also use the tailgate as a prep, bar station and like the ability to reach anything in the back of the Bronco easily, and if the weather is inclement, stay dry while doing it. The room these tents offer is immense with a 11" height, you have lots of room to move around in.
I also find it very easy to detach your Bronco for any trips, and just as easy to re-attach to the tent come the end of the day.
At $399., this Napier tent is more expensive than the one you linked to, it is worth it as the quality and strength of the tent is worth the extra.

I did not realize that they were easy to take on and off. What happens to the tent when you disconnect from Bronco? Like can you seal it from bugs or rain while you are out roaming with your Bronco?

Thanks for the Napier endorsement Poacher. Their website offers a discount for registering a website, which would help $$. I have a couple of questions since you have this one:
- Do you get airflow with that rain fly attached? It looks tight fitting and comes down low compared to most others (assuming the awning feature is down when raining)
- Can you get the tailgate open to at least the 90 degree spot without the spare deforming the tent side?

The more I looked on Amazon, if I was leaning toward this one (or the the Napier):

It's a foot wider which I thought may allow more room to push the tailgate open further, and the screen room looks handy. Although it would probably take longer to setup.

Yes. From what I'm seeing the design varies, but think of the opening for the tailgate like one of the windows but with no bug mesh. So when you pull the SUV away, you just zip close the large opening.

Just adding a little closure here for anyone following along. Poking around on Napier's website, I found this Sportz SUV tent with the screen room option. I realize that adds some bulk, but if one of our older kid tags along, this offers more room. And from reviews I read, the screen room can be unzipped and removed if not needed. As a bonus, it was on sale on Amz for around $320 + tax, so little less than the regular Sportz SUV tent. I feel one of those driveway tent assembly trials in my future!

Hey AngusMac13,
The're very easy to leave the tent in place and drive off for the day, or just a run to town for supplies. It is just as easy to back up to the tent and re-attach. In your absence, the tent seals up soundly and remains not only bug proof, but also waterproof in your absence.

Hey Fillups,
You definitely still get airflow with the rain fly attached. If the fly is attached correctly, i.e., the correct tautness, the design still allows lots of airflow to come up between the bottom of the fly and into the tent, yet still ensures no rain gets in. It works very well, and I have used this tent on numerous occasions in all sorts of weather.
As to the tailgate, I had no problem having the it open to 90 degrees with no issues in regards to fitting within the tent. It is not designed to go past that though.
As to the tent on your link, it looks pretty damn good, even more space, but it is only rated water resistant. That is a key negative to me, as it will not protect you for long in a rain event.

Good spot on the screen room option. I did not opt for it as I travel with just my partner and I, but I may have to revisit as the extra space is always a nice thing to have. If you do go this route, make sure you get the screen room with the floor (footprint) attachment to ensure it is truly bug proof.

Thanks for the follow up. I ordered from Amz, mostly for the free shipping / price. Shipping from their site was pretty steep (around $50). But I may pickup that floor separately since it's only $24.

I wonder why the rain / water repellent rating would be different? The fly looks like it covers the screen room, and I think the rest is the same. But I guess time will tell.

This thing arrived today, and it's bit heavier than I expected, but I guess that is to be expected. Looked at the specs again today and it's 15 pounds heavier than the non-screen room model (now that I check the weight spec after it arrived). Should be fun!

Congratulations on your new purchase. I know that you will get a lot of use out of it. The versatility will surprise you, and you will definitely enjoy the room and height.
I would suggest that you do set it up in your driveway before actually heading out overnight, as it will give you a much easier set up if you have to do it in the dark.
Let's hope the difference in rating is not a concern.
