Hello!
I'll be driving from Savannah up to Boston to celebrate my Mom's 80th at the end of the month. I'd like to take 81 since I've never driven that route. My initial thought is to do it in 2 long stints and stay somewhere in VA / MD as a midpoint on the way up, but maybe take 3 days on the way back. I'll be alone for the drive if that makes any difference.
My questions are:
  • is 81 a nice drive compared to 95?
  • Anybody have some "Must See" things along the way I should check out? Perhaps a little trail I should check out?
Living in Savannah there are ZERO trails to wheel on, so I was thinking this could be a good opportunity to dip my toe in some Appalachian trails as a wheeling n00b.

Thanks y'all

Interstate 81 thru VA and PA is a very scenic ride, although you will have some heavy traffic in southern PA. I have not been further north than PA on 81.
If you do take 81 there are some great trails in PA just off 81 in the old coal country. Both AOAA and Rausch Creek have several trails for all skill and rig levels. They both have fees and require groups of at least 2 vehicles. If you are unable to find someone to go with you thru BN, Off Road Consulting runs guided trail rides at both parks.
The crew at Off Road Consulting is great! I took an offroad training course with them since I have been unable to get to an Off-Roadeo location yet. It was a fun and educational time, well worth the money.

If you do I81 in one direction, you HAVE to do the Blue Ridge Parkway in the other direction. It's darn close to 81 in a lot of locations, but run it from it's end point in VA to somewhere in NC that makes sense for you: https://www.blueridgeparkway.org/
