question about fuel grade

I was under the assumption the Bronco will be fine with 87 octane; however, someone mentioned to me that I need to use 89 instead, which would suck considering it's more expensive. I was researching various sites about which fuel grade to use, but read many conflicting comments.

So, which is it?

You can use reg, mid or premium. What you use will determine your mpg, HP an tourq.

Agree, with exception to MPG, that is dependent on how and where you drive. When I took ownership we were pushing 5 bucks a gallon here in PA I ran 87, when we got to under $4/gallon I started doing 87 one fill then 93 the next (i fill between 1/2 and 1/4 tank) millage has not changed but u do feel a little, tiny pick up in throttle after a 93 fill up

Here's a link to a post I made where I did a (somewhat) extensive test between 93 and 87 octane in my 2.3L, manual transmission Big Bend.

https://thebronconation.com/general...ane-in-2-3l-with-manual-transmission-t.12759/

I should add that since that test, I've switched back to 91/93 octane when towing as I thought I was hearing a little detonation on 87 when I pulled my camper across the Rockies. I never noticed this in the Appalachians so I'm willing to bet that altitude and its lack of O2 was the culprit.

I went from a Thirsty V8 powered Ram to this slightly less thirsty Bronco, and I'm about the Buff Ponies, so I only run 93. She hasn't had Regular since she rolled off the truck last year.

30hp, 15tq, you'd normally have to spend a few hundred bucks and risk your warrantee for those numbers, here it's just $5-8 extra depending on where ya go, and then compound that with mods and the Ford Tune

The octane will not matter, OH YES IT DOES FOLKS, insert here. There have been many studies, both normal folks and professionals that you will get the same, 87, 89,93. Buy the 87, slow down and watch your MPG go up.

I've always run 93 in the east and now 91 in the west, so I don't know how 87 runs. However, I will say that at 55 MPH and in Eco mode, I get 22 MPG. I think driving style has the most to do with it. I'm easy on the throttle, easy on the brakes, unless I'm having fun, testing something, or running for my life.

I run 87. I normally use Exxon or Sunoco, they're the ones local to me. The times I've used convenience store gas, I've noticed a difference in mileage, not severe but a difference...

The manual states 89 (oops I mean 87) Octane for normal driving. As previous posts state, several factors can play into your choice, but I am considering non-ethanol fuel. It lasts longer, more fuel economy and it's better for engine. Unfortunately, it's also more expensive and harder to find. I happen to live near a WAWA with the non-ethanol regular option for +.80 more a gallon.

The 2.3L engine has a 10.1 compression ratio. I don't think you can run 87 octane gas without having some engine de-tuning. Ford handles that electronically and that is why you can run 87 to 91/93 octane gas. The reason they specify premium for off road use is to achieve the full performance capabilities of the engine.

you can tune a guitar but can't tune a fish

I fully believe you get better mpg with 93 over 87 through my own use and experience. I donโ€™t know if it offsets the cost or not. I also donโ€™t know if there are other benefits like cleaner engine etc. But mpg and performance are definitely affected.

Wasn't there a thread that debunked all of this? Maybe it was on the G6 sight.

the octane effects the power out put theoretically if you make more power with the same amount of fuel burned you could get better mpg but in the real world I have not seen any mpg benefits

Octane does not affect MPG. It can up the HP, (as Ford has mentioned) if you drove your truck hard enough that the computer had to adjust timing/tuning downwards to stop detonation due to 87 octane. As people have previously mentioned, you can get a larger increase of power from running premium than most exhaust/muffler upgrades which may make it sound better but rarely increase much power at all, if any. Check dyno results of after market exhaust systems if you don't believe me. So compare paying for premium gas vs. a $700-1000 over the lifetime of your truck if you want to run the numbers. BTW I like aftermarket exhausts and have bought them for most of my vehicles over the last 40 years, not dissing exhausts
